Returning hunters from the southern part of the state say that when the season opened in New Mexico over 2,000 deer were driven into Utah, and if only a small per cent of these deer remain in our state, one can readily realize that it means a big increase for next year. M. L. Scott brought home a buck, the head of which is a prize winner. The antler spread is 42 incnes and has eight prongs, and it is now being mounted for a keepsake, as well as future stories reminiscent of the The deer season made a hit with the boys this year. There was a good reason for it nearly everybody that went out got a buck. It has been two years since several of the sportsmen came into our office and wanted The Citizen to back a movement to open the law on does, as well as on bucks. There were too many does in the hills and some of those who did not give the matter much thought were willing and anxious to shoot, the does.. With sporting organizations in near ly every county of the state, the boys should devote a great deal of energy in speeding up the government in Its proposed plan to dike the Bear river sloughs. This would immediately create a new vast breeding ground for the ducks, but the work should not stop there. A chain of such places should run from Montana, down through Idaho, and through to the southern part of . Utah. This state has many ideal locations for ducks, but under present condition of the grounds, some of them dried up, others having no feed, need considerable work. It is the purpose of the government to buy up all the slough land and turn it hack to the ducks, and in turn the hunters will get some good shooting. There is considerable duck country in this county. Nearly all the land north of the Saltair tracks and west of the surplus canal can be turned into duck country, and if this was accomplished, the boys of this county would not be compelled to travel long distances to get a few ducks. The new dike put in by the Utah State Gun club along the lake front has done wonders to hold the ducks. The Rudy club, about two miles south of the New State Gun club, has also put in a large dike which has created a new lake, where some of the water is as deep as twelve feet This provides a new feed ground for the deep water ducks, which will result in much , nd - Now, if the federal government would take over the "duck ground west of the present clubs in Salt Lake county, a duck preserve could be created which would mean much to stimulate the duck increase. .It is a mistake to dry up duck grounds during the summer months. It drives the ducks away, and even after the ponds are flooded in the fall, there is no feed there for the ducks and consequently there is no shooting. 0 ' L BIG DOUBLEHEADER Bonday, Dec. 5 at the HIPPODROME Ed.
