Show THE CITIZEN 0 within a relatively short time, the government will have an income of several million dollars per year, and that the entire cost of government buildings and of other improvements will be returned in this fashion. Also, by keeping control of the land, the nation is enabled to make the growth of the city symmetrical; thus profiting from the experience of Washington, which had a superb plan at the start, but it has been almost ruined by land sharks. This practical experiment in the single tax will be watched with world-wid- e interest. Australians have no doubt whatever of its success. The public is constantly seeking lower rates, and at the time remains passive while legislatures are passing fuy laws and similar laws which compel the employment of men than needed and which increase operating costs and rate;j The labor lobbyists, for the purpose of intimidation, kee record of those who vote for and against their bills, and do hesitate to warn those who refuse to take their program of consequences at the next election. Men of moral stamina resent such practices. Any veil formed observer knows that the labor vote is not livered like so much chattel by any lobbyist or band of loli ists, and that the lobbyist rarely controls more than his 9 ga c' r led a n so-call- ed DESERTING THE FARM The government is somewhat concerned regarding the great decrease of population on the farms. That should be an easy matter to figure. The farmer boy of today who is given an education does not want to return to the farm to work. He looks to the city where he puts out his shingle as a lawyer, a doctor, a dentist, etc., and the farm loses him forever. His folks may die on the farm, and then the farm is leased out or is allowed to crumble in its dust for a few years. Education entirely eliminates all desire to work hard, that is manual labor. When all Americans have become thoroughly educated, we will have to import slaves to do our hard work. None of us are in love with the pick and shovel. Education vs. labor will some day become a problem which will greatly effect our social standing. BRANCHING OUT. The United States chamber of commerce is studying world commerce and the members say that the time has now arrived when an international viewpoint is necessary. This means that a new flood of laws will be presented at the next congress providing ways and means to do international business, according to the ideas of the chamber of commerce. FARM EFFICIENCY it o vote. lit ( The public should give closer attention to the conduct of public servants and when it finds a legislator bidding for class vote by betraying the public welfare, it should at fnt elections effectively express its disapproval. V The increasing use of power, other than man and beast, on farms, is evident from figures compiled by the Bureau of Statistics, Department of Agriculture. The number of farms having tractors has increased from 5,374 in 1920 to 24,100 on January 1, 1927 ; the number of farms having- gas engines from 54,607 in 1920, to 85,818 in 1927 ; and the number of farms having electricity from 8,495 in 1921, to 1 t i The military training camps are becoming very popular this country.
