Show Y t i i 1 I H E C l f cd by some government agency, bureau or commission, whose salaries and expenses must be provided by us in taxes. We boast that ours is a land of liberty, and yet the curious fact is, that the American people are, by law, forbidden to do more things, and ordered to do more things than was the case in Russia under the Czar, or in Turkey, under the Sultan. FOOD PRICES 1 I TIZE N FOREST FIRES In the campaign of education to prevent forest fires, a gestion is made that campers and picnickers carry with ex ti to be used in smothering camp fires i shovels long-handl- ed . earth, says the Seattle Times. Prevent fires through moderate, reasonable use of the iid ests. Protect the right to renew your youth by occasional t tact with nature, unhampered by other men, and there wi Ple no need for carrying curative weapons into the forests. It is the unthinking, boastful fool who misuses the privil see: of enjoying nature at her best, and such individuals are a me pan wdierever they are to be found. They do not have to go cam to demonstrate it. Walla Walla, Wash., Union. The best way to correct carelessness, thoughtlessness, ai and are curb a is a good stiff fine. . lond-headedne- ss Judging from the recent election in Iowa, it is the idea of the voters in that state that the government must do something to stabilize crop prices. A long time ago, a supposedly smart man had the sea lashed with chains in his determination to prevent the tide from rising. But the tide seemed to pay no attention to his command and has continued to rise and fall, even to this day. There is just about as much chance for Congress to force a set price for wheat, corn or any other crop as there is to stop the tide rising and falling. The law of supply and demand, which in the case of farm crops is largely regulated by the weather, causes a rise and fall in prices which is as irresistible as the tide. We show just about as much sense in trying to hold crop prices at a set level, as we would in trying to hold the tide ( dont-care-natu- re the T at a set level. At that, the combinations are holding up prices beyond all reasons. It is because of the high prices that Congress is sub- ject to much criticism and many people believe that the present tariff is the cause of the trouble. drinking is sold at 60 cents per Any coffee that is worth pound; flour is, within a few- cents, as high as it was during the hispeak war prices ; vegetables and fruits are the highest in the no wonder that the people are tory of the nation. It is therefore complaining. No matter how- big the fruit crop or how many carloads of fruit may be left on the trees, the price fixing combinations hold up the people on prices in the cities. Many complaints have reached this office regarding high costs. We find that sugar is the only commodity that is reasonable in price, but people cannot live alone on sugar. of the The people are all out of proportion to the price paid for foodstuffs. No the people are complaining. vill stui For the first time in the history of the Government, baistre say, the secretary of the treasury is retiring a complete issiThe government bonds reissuing a new series in part to their places.
