Without the mines, Utah would amount to very little. The of some great mining camps Utah, and of them are the largest in the world, consume much of the food products produced in this state. Most of the skyscrapers" of this city were built from Utah mine money, and there are many more millions of dollars to be dug out of the ground during future years. The oil boom will help the mines the present year. More moneyed people will come into the state and when they discover our rich mineral deposits they will invest some of their money in mines, as well as in oil wells. The oil men are now waiting for good weather conditions to commence operations and many of them are confident of bringing in some big wells before next fall. Notwithstanding the importance of the mining industry, we have eastern senators that hit the mining industry whenever they can. It must be lack of education or ignorance on their part. Some of them appear to think that all one has to do is to go into the back yard and dig a hole and pick the gold and silver out of it. ABANDONED CALLS. Sometimes people are called to the telephone, only to be informed that there is no one on the line. Naturally they are annoyed and almost always they blame the operator. But is it the operators fault? It may be and sometimes it is, but very often the call is what is termed an abandoned call, and the operator is in no way to blame. Some one gives a number to the operator, is interrupted or changes his mind for some reason and hangs up the receiver before the number is obtained. Or he may discover he has made a mistake in giving the number and so hangs up rather than wait to explain to the wrong party. Or the right number is slow in responding, so that the impatient calling party does not wait for the call to be completed, but hangs ROBINS PREDICT GOOD WEATHER FOR FISHERMEN If we believe in tradition then we are convinced that we will have six weeks of cold weather. The groundhog saw its shadow last Tuesday noon and the following day it snowed. However, if we take nature as our guide, we are going to have open weather during the remainder of the wint.;' and no more long cold spells. The robins have returned and hundreds of them were seen in different parts of the city the first part of the week. The robin is a migratory bird; it leaves here in the fall and returns in the spring or when the weather is permissible. It is seldom seen at this time fo the year, and its presence here now signifies mild weather for the balance of the winter. As a weather prophet we will back the robin against the groundhog, or for that matter we will take the robins prediction in preference to even that of the weather bureau. If good weather is upon us then it is time for the boys to get out their fishing tackle. If the market fishermen have left any icatfish in Utah lake, fishing will be good the first warm days we have. The catfishermen were greatly disappointed last year because of the scarcity of the esteemed cat and but few fish were caught, the seines and fish traps of the previous two years being responsible for the depletion. Four or five years ago there was much noise made about bringing in a carload of channel cats, which were planted in Utah lake. We were told that it would only be a short time First prize is $2,000. Utah mines are responsible for increasing the income tax in Utah for the year 1925. Notwithstanding that the government had made big reductions in tax rates, Utah yielded for 1925 as compared to $3, 873,393 for 1924. James H. Anderson, United States internal revenue collector, says that the increase of $392,634 in income tax was directly due to the mining industry of the state. It goes to show how important the mining industry is to Utah. Because of the high cost of metals, or rather higher in price than in former years, there was added production and greater development than $4,-266,0- 27 The State Road Commission of Utah has been petitioned to widen the strip of highway between Salt n Lake and Bountiful on the Salt highway. This will be concrete work under present plans. Mining has always been a mark for attack and it is not unusual to have up. Most persons do not stop to think that many people do not have extension telephones in their homes and must go from one end of the house to the other in answering the telephone. So it is not always the operator who is at fault when she says, Thvjii is no one on the line now. Will you excuse it, please. r.
