Show THE CITIZEN G . I . MANAGER HORNING AIDS DEVELOPMENT OF CITY Building activity in Salt Lake has necessitated an extensive expansion program for the Utah Gas and Coke Company, it was announced yesterday by Mr. George R. Horning, general manager. In its desire to provide every service possible for its patrons, over $75,000 will be spent immediately in improvements and extention of service. This development is largely in the southeast section of the city where a . togas holder, boosters and govenors gether with three miles of new gas main will be installed. The improvements are in addition to the $200,000 expansion program previously announced by the company. Perhaps the building of the gas container holds more interest for the public than the other development features, said Mr. Horning. It will be erected in a beautiful grove of tall cottonwood trees on Hor-tonsph- landscaping it will be an objject of local interest and pride. In describing it, Mr. Horning said that it could best be done by comparing it to the dome of the well known Tabernacle in the Temple Grounds. It will be about the heighth of the Tabernacle, having a diameter of 65 feet. It is a departure from usual gas practice and will have some unusual engineering features. A special feature, of community interest, will be the spacious playground constructed in the cool grove for the children of the neighborhod. With its high shade trees, parked green plaza, flower beds, sand pits, teeters, chutes and swings it will make an ideal park for the children to play in. According to present plans, it is the intention of the management to call it Recrea- tion Park. It will be well cared for with a gravelled entrance and proper- - ly enclosed. The property recently purchased by the company from Professor George Coray of the University of Utah, is 120 feet square, giving ample room for the children to safely play in a protected playground. Since we haven't ample playground facilities in this part of the city it will prove a valuable adjunct to the community, stated Elias S. The utility company management feel that the expenditure is justified in. that the fast increasing business and the anticipated growth will repay the company for the outlay in improvements. With the improvements planned the said Mr. Homing, and in with the progressive program ly announced, this investment oig ands of. dollars is evidence 4 faith the Utah Gas and Coke pany has in Salt Lake. to further carry out any development that will service to the public.
