In order to o t ns it has taken carefully considered planning and now the are aware of the fact that business has a people problem of its own, namely, the elimination of the waste in and distribution. This is a problem that is being production carefully studied by the leading business men of all industries throughout the nation. Another angle that confronts the people is the matter of local taxation. This is one that must be dealt with by the states, counties and cities, and it must be dealt with in a manner that does not savor of kid glove" methods. II may hurt a certain class of office holders, but it will save the balance of the of the people country large sums of money. NEW WAR WEAPON There has been so much comment on arms conferences, leagues and courts, that most of the people wonder what it is all about. Are the nations kidding each other and for preparing the worst at the same time I If the nations are in earnest about doing away with certain war weapons, why not do away with all of them and purchase boxing gloves for flic soldiers to fight with ? W e can place J ack Dempsey at the head of our armv and we will take our chance with any of them. Sherman said that war is hell. He knew it, we know it, and we also know that it is the intention of each combatant to wipe out the opponent as quickly as possible. Agreements be all may on to the nation which is not prepared right paper, but woe to meet an emergency. If big navies and large standing armies were done away with by each country there would be less war. China sets a good example. She never goes outside of her own lines to fight, neither does Mexico. But of course the reader might ask, who wauts to be a Chinaman or a Mexican!" GOITER SURVEY State Health Commissioner Dr. T. B. Beatty has completed a state wide goiter survey, which was conducted under the direction of Dr. James Wallace, state epidemiologist. The survey was made among the school children of which 109,910 were examined and carded for future reference. The survey shows that about 32 per cent of the boys are afflicted with goiter and over 54 per cent of the girls, which indeed is an alarming condition to have in our state. Dr. Beatty says that strict iodine treatment will eventually eradicate this disease which attacks the human throat glands because of the lack of iodine in water and food provided for the people. Hence it must be artificially supplied. The state of Wisconsin, especially its skilled mechanics g and farmers, should take an interest in taxation. enthusiasts plan to put all the load of taxation oil backs able to bear it." Their idea is to make big industries and big merchants pay all the taxes, double tlie inheritance tax, provide a big fund to pay wages to all unemployed, etc. That sounds interesting, but the plan as outlined will drive Well-meanin- industries across the Wisconsin line into Hlinois and other states.
