Show THE CITIZEN 4 A fourth cause of present depression is our heavy jjw taxes. The federal government is doing all in its. pm reduce the taxation upon the people, but local authoriti cities of the nation give no thought to the welfare of the and go right along spending our money as if it. came inexhaustible fund. The high taxes have forced property to charge exorbitant rentals, especially for business p and the rents are too high for the merchants to do at business. As a natural result of the high rents many merchants are forced to rent store rooms of small limits their purchase, powers for the lack of storage. Before success can come there must necessarily be plete reversion of all things back to normal. Inflation a destructive path. Tax assessments must' be lowered at partment budgets made to conform to the respective ra collected. There should be no favorites on the tax rolls equitably assessed-a- t reasm property' should be fairly-anrates and there should be. fixed a rate for. every block per foot and the system carried to every part of the city, j should be collected upon the real estate,"'while improven shpuld be ineouraged by a lesser tax. The commons is that if the ordinary person'paintshis home dr puti green lawn the tax is raised accordingly. ' This' is not done in our city, but is, it should be done away with. only covers a defect and should not be subject to taxation. Our former President Harding, .as he went .throng inL country told the people to. lower .their taxes. Your tan too high and you will feel, the from them if von lower them and his saying is now bearing fruit. Will our politicians take heed! The faithful dog and gritty man was a last resort. There was scrum twelve days distant from Nome, but in twelve days the children which the Inmight all be dead. Then came the heroic race in dian and loved dog undertook the task to save the children. The thermometer registered 58 degrees below zero and a snow blizzard was blowing over the country which it was said no man or animal could survive. It was in this blizzard that Saloman Basco the worthy son of an Indian chieftain consented to take the most dangerous of the relays planned to Nome. As he debid parted on his perilous trip old timers shook their heads and with tear dimmed eyes, for none thought him a last good-bythev would ever see him alive again. Out into the blizzard lie drove his dog team. There was no trail to follow but the animal instinct of those splendidly trained dogs .which appeared to sense the duty they had to perform, steadily and surely picked their way over mountain and valley, over frozen rivers and mountains of ice and deep snows in a blinding blizzard. The journey had never boon made in less than twelve days, but the superhuman efforts of man and animal made the journey in a little over three days and enscrolled their names upon the pages of history which will forever bear witness to their heroic deed. The unbelievable was accomplished and hundreds of lives were saved and the deeds of man and the faithful dog made, immortal.. This hero Basco and his wife, together with. their wonderful dog team appear at the Pantages theatre in person and no one once baffled what to do and was helpless to give any aid. fi e, . at d pro) if-i- t 1 Ja should miss seeing them. ill-effe- BUSINESS cts k . The ordinary merchant is groaning under business depression and many of them are having a hard time to make both (lids meet. Business men meet in small groups and discuss the situation and all come to about the same conclusion as to the location of the responsibility for' the lack of business. It is well known that outside of a few favored localities, business is far below normal, or at least is not properly paying its way. Various remedies have been suggested and some efforts have boon made along well directed lines to stimulate trade but most all art proving futile. Some say that there are too many people in the same kind of business and where the profits are subject to such wide distribution no one is able to make a go of it. It is suggested that business must organize under cooperative plans and suggest that the chain store is a thought in the right direction. However, such action would' only more divide the people into two classes, the rich and the poor. The automobile is placed at the head of the list which is looked upon as one big factor responsible for poor business. It is the desire for every human to possess or own a cair, and many neople sacrifice their all in order to get the car. A groat majority of the automobiles can be purchased on time, and it takes nearly every cent of the ordinary worker to pay for the car and by the time the car is paid for it is worn out and a new car must be purchased. Money goes into the car and upkeep that should legitimately go into other necessary living commodities and channels. Next comes prohibition. The people who have money go to foreign countries to spend their vacations and spend large; sums of money which should be spent at home. Many Americans are moving to Canada where they are building homes and this migration is beginning to tell upon us. There are many other angles to be considered. A heretofore revenue has been turned into a big deficit which the taxpayers must meet and it is an unjust burden upon the people. Restricted emigration is a third ill which our financiers claim is plavine havoc in this countrv and is gradually boosting the cost of living out of all reason and proportion. We must have cheap labor in our larger industrial institutions if we expect to compete with the nations of the world and if we expect to hold down our living costs. -- . . a m .MOTHER Mothers Day has come and gone.
