Show THE CITIZEN 4 roads, and 121.83 miles of fairly good graded earth roads. Yet our city commissioners say concrete roads are not fit for our city streets. There is a movement on foot among the county commissioners to take away the power of the state road commission and instead provide for regulations which would give the county commissioners the power to build all the roads within their own counties. Upon first thought it appears as if the best results could be accomplished under such a system, but upon investigation, the Citizen finds that there are other interests involved behind the deal besides the county commissioners, and we are now of the opinion that it would be very dangerous to do away with the state road commission, a purpose which is in the air at the present time. We are having trouble with our county commissioners right South street, west of State now. The people along Thirty-thir- d street want that street paved with Portland cement concrete and thev are not receiving anv encouragement in their request. This street has been paved twice, part way with bituminous and part way with patented bitulithie, and neither surface has given satisfaction and the farmers are disgusted with the present pavement and now ask to have it improved with cement concrete. They say that a shoulder can be placed on each side of the present pavement and the cement "poured over the top of the present road which will make out of the present washboard an ideal highway. This part of the road is the Lincoln highway, and the Lincoln highwav officials are surprised that there has been any talk of again using blacktop when cement is so much better. bituminous California is pouring cement over old worn-ou- t roads with good results. Nine miles of the Columbia highway is also being treated in the same way. SUNDAY THEATRE. t ritory. The Chamber of Commerce of that city had decided that shows on Sundays would be beneficial to the community, but church leaders differ in opinion and claim that the morals of the people will suffer. General Yon Ilindenburg has been elected president of Germany in a close race, defeating Dr. Wilhelm Marx. The rulers of manv countries feel quite uneasv as a result of the election. Hindenberg is an old warrior and there is much speculation as to whether the new president will be able to hold himself aloof from militarism. In preliminary election speeches, Hindenburg carefully weighed his words and if he carries out his ideas, nations need not fear his term of office. Of course France feels very uneasy because it was Ilindenburg who pressed them so hard and quite naturally they do not look for any friendship from their old warring enemy. But after all, what difference does it make who is elected. Germany is practically disarmed. Her naw is gone, her large standing army is gone, her large munition factories are gone, and the talk of her coming back as a warrior is all bosh and a France has a standing armv of 700.000 men in nightmare. the field.
