Show THE CITIZEN LOWDEN. Frank 0. Lowden, former governor of Illinois, and one of the most prominent Republicans of our country, an able lawyer and Statesman; and who lowered the taxes over thirty per cent in his state, and that during the late world war, addressed a large and enthu-- . siastic gathering of citizens at the Salt Lake theatre. He spoke upon constructive government and how to accomplish the things necessary to bring financial success to the people. He clearly pointed out our mistakes in years gone by and how we overcame some of them, and how to avoid them in the future. Tariff was the feature of his talk and he told his listeners what effect tariff had upon our every, day life, and what it meant to the welfare of this country. COOLIDGE APPEARS CINCH. Calvin Coolidge appears a big favorite over all other opponents in the presidential race which is to be decided by the people of the United States next Tuesday. Four years ago, only about half the people voted. It is to be hoped that nearly all the vote will be cast for this election. Davis will carry the south and Coolidge will take the north, while La Follette is given Wisconsin, although he may run a big surprise in some other states. The only way it seems possible to defeat Coolidge at the present time..is for La Follette to carry six or seven states and for Davis to carry some northern states which would so split the electoral vote as to Straw votes, which have been taken in all part defeat Coolidge. of the country, show Coolidge the popular choice of the people. La Follette is gathering more strength than was at first anticipated, and there are some who place him second in a majority of the northern states. If he can gather a big vote, it is an assured fact that in the future we will have three parties in the field, and if each beparty has fair representation in Congress, party domination will come ancient history. The minority will in fact be the dictators because they may swing to one side or the other at will. Whether such representation will be beneficial to the nation is for the people to decide at the election next Tuesday. FORD IS FOR COOLIDGE. Coolidge is prosperity, says Henry Ford. To quote the exact words of Ford, the richest man of America, he says: Personally, I have no doubt but that Coolidge will be decisively elected. He will be elected because he has refused to be the tool of any class. He has not served any special interest. Wall Street has found that he cannot be handled, and by Wall . ;Street I mean that section of the international money trust that oper-ate- s in the United States in Wall sreet, in Lombard street in London :and in the Place De La Bourse in Paris. That is the money power that made the war, poisoned the peace, exploited Germany and threw England into unemployment. That money power does not want Calvin Coolidge. Men have come to me and asked how I could support Coolidge, a Republican, when I supported Wilson, a Democrat. Im not supporting Coolidge because he is a Republican; I did not support Wilson because he was a Democrat; I am for Coolidge now because I believe that. he thinks more of the people than of the party. I think he is an able man, deserving the support of all forward looking. menl I appreciate the fact that Coolidges opponents have attempted to make it appear that his support has largely a corporation flavor. Coolidge is supported by American businessmen, but I believe that he is for American business as against the money power. Not ,for a long time has our government been so. free of;the , , , influence of special interests as during Coolidges brief administranew as against the old, honesty as against tion. He stands for-thservice as against party log rolling. old compromise,-publiNew business systems confront each other in this country, pro; ducts as against profits, service as against spoils. "I think Coolidge is onthe side service, prosperity. Thats why l am for Coolidge. . . e c The. people1 know that. Henry, Ford' has no axe; to grind. For a time it was said that Muscle Shoals had swayed Ford to the support of Coolidge, hut now Ford has absolutely cancelled all negotiations for the Shoals, but he is still for Coolidge. Ford absolutely knows that the country will continue in prosj, if is elected. Coolidge perity How about you Mr. Voter? Are you for prosperity?. The biggest men of the nation are confident that Coolidge can give you more prosperity than you now have. - CHARLES GATES DAWES. What do you know about Charles Gates Dawes, who is running for vice president on the Republican ticket? He is a prominent business man of Chicago who has made good, . not only in his private business, but working for Uncle Sam as well Since the United States entered the World War in 1917 Genegl Dawes has served in three capacities: First, as general purchasing agent, with the job of keeping some 2,000,000 troops in food, clothing and supplies. Second, as director of the Federal budget, in which position he cut down the governments expenses somewhere between $250,000,-00- 0 and $300,000,000 in a single year. Third, as chief of the committee of experts that recently returned from Europe, after reporting on Germanys capacity to pay indemnities. In his spare time, General Dawes is an author and composer of music. Music is the thing he loves best and he plays and writes it. THE STREET CAR. Indications all over our country are that this year will show more miles of street car lines abandoned than ever before in our history. Jitney lines, motor busses, private motor cars, and all kinds of motorcycles have cut street car earnings to the quick, and service is pulled off. Thousands of miles are being abandoned, and almost no new mileage has been built ; but there are signs that there is a turn in the tide and the American street car traction systems will be retained in the public service. Public service commissions are granting them increased fares, allowing them to take up unprofitable and unnecessary tracks, and in many cities are allowing them to substitute motor bus service. On top of this, assessed valuations to reduce taxes are being permitted and in 46 cities, street car lines have been relievd of all paving costs. Of course, this means heavier expense for street building upon the private property owner and heavier taxes must be thrown upon interests that compete .with street railways. LIVE AS YOU PREACH If the people of the United States are honest with themselves, or practice what they preach, they will elect Herman P. Faris president of the United States. Everybody tries to make you believe that he or she is for piO hibition. Mr. Faris is the only presidential candidate to represent the prohibitionists. His name s hardly mentioned, iris the daily we are all for prohibition ? press-7-y- et Both of the big parties have dodged the issue ; Faris stands up on his convictions. The vote Faris does get will be a fair indication of what the people really and truly believe as regards prohibition. We are fur-thaway from prohibition than ever. The vote Faris gets will show that. There is abuut one out of a thousand people know that Faris is , cr running fo rpresident. Just 'watch and sec how the prohibitionists will flock to Mr. Faris at the coming clection(?) His vote will be the easiest countfti . v - . I, t f m , What are the Democrats and the third party kicking about? We have a fair tariff and a bumper trade, and prosperity at home beyond the dreams of Europe. ; |
