Show THE CITIZEN 6 provement. An approximate estimate based upon incomplete studies is that at the end of the year there were about 60,000 miles of surfaced roads and 8,700 miles graded, which leaves nearly 110,000 miles yet to be surfaced. To bring this system up to serviceable standards, therefore, within the full decade ahead, will mean a surfacing program of about 11,000 miles for each of the ten years; this In addition to additions to the system, the separation of grade crossings, reconstruction and such other work necessary. NEWSPAPER ASSOCIATION MEMBER, No. 2207 GOOD ROADS BIG ASSET TO DRAW TOURIST TRADE .The board of directors of the Lincoln Highway association has refused any further aid .to Utah and Nevada for the completion of the Lincoln highway through these two states until such time as Utah lives up to its contract to help build the highway to the Nevada line. Utah accepted $125,000 of Lincoln highway money and put it in the surveyed road, leaving part of the road uncompleted to Nevada. Nevada was given some $60,000 for the same purpose and that state is willing to go ahead with the work, but is blocked by Utah. As a direct result of this conflict" tourists are told in the east that Utah is to be avoided and a majority of the tourists leaving Colorado when they come to that state, turn north into Wyoming and go through Idaho into Oregon; or they go south from Colorado and take the southern highway to California, thus losing to Utah millions of dollars in tourist trade. The natural roadway is through Utah, the state which can proudly boast of the most beautiful scenic wonders of the entire country. Our wonders are advertised by the Chamber of Commerce through expensive advertising, and yet the timid avoid our state, not willing to take a chance on our rough roads to see these wonders. As soon as our state shows a willingness to help build the Lincoln highway, large sums of money will be donated from the east to help us build or finish the Lincoln highway through our state. Do you want that eastern money? Do we want to be on the Lincoln MINES. .... However, all other metals are dull and at a standsill with a well supplied market. Iron and steel is moving very slowly on the depressed market and copper hangs out at a very low figure. Trading on the local stock exchange is confined principally to the cheaper stocks. Brokers do not look for much change in present conditions until after election, when everybody believes that business will go back to normal and capital will drift into r Why have our state officials discouraged the building of this highway?
