Show THE CITIZEN 10 takes place that night, and la Roche saves both de Vrieac and his fiancee on condition that the young nobleman becomes his servant for five years. At the castle of La Roche de Vrieac is subjected to much humiliation at the .hands of la Roche and his beautiful sister, Yeoland de Breux, hut finally, after a desperate encounter with a .wolf, saves the life of the invalid sis- -' ter .of his tormentors. Later Yoeland, guarded by de .Vrieac, goes to visit her cousin, and there meets the despicable Due de Tours, who seeks to win her. De Vrieac saves her after a desperate battle in which de Tours is killed .Later, at the request of Yoeland, de Vrieac is released from his oath of .servitude, and the avowal of love between the young couple brngs to an ?end the feud between the two fanii- .lies. Probably never in her brilliant carreer has the talented Norma Talmadge better displayed her beauty and talents than she does here as Yoeland. And as Rupert, Conway Tearle plays his part in a manner as to almost share honors with the star herself. Walace Berry rises to heights seldom before equaled in the portrayal of the cowardly and despicable villain of the play. The entire cast, and it is large and distinguished, displays no weak spots, and is ably handled in all of the many big scenes. A word of praise here for rector Frank Lloyd. There are thousands of extras in the big scenes, and these, as well as the principals, perform with a precision which Is impos sible except by masterly direction. ; uu-usaul- ly in full action are two of the scenic marvels of this wonderful play. AU the scenery has been kept Intact for the production, which is bound to excel the former offering in that the players are already familiar with their lines and will play their roles perfectly. The way romance, comedy, tragedy and thrills are comingled in The Bird of Paradise make its appeal ir resistible. The last scene where the unhappy Luana casts herself into the burning lake of Kilauea as a human sacrifice, is a most thrilling finale. The Bird of Paradise will be presented every night next week with matinees on New eYars day, Thursday and Saturday. CONTENTMENT. The advance sale indicates that the Wilkes management was right in arranging for an early reproduction of this remarkable paly. When played a few weeks back, thosuands were turned away and hundreds have asked to see it again. A big percentage of the folks who hold season reservations have asked the theatre to be sure to hold their seats for them, is they wish to come agan to see the SUGAR MONEY In an address before the Investment Bankers association upon the subject of federal aid for public highways, Secretary Wallace of the Department of Agriculture states that the federal tax collected on automobiles, automobile accessories and the use of passenger automobiles for hire greatly exceeded the expenditures of the federal government for federal aid to public highways. The first tax of this character was imposed in 1917 as a war revenue iheasure. Since the war it has been modified. The present federal tax law imposes 5 per cent on the selling price of motor vehicles, tires and accessories, excepting motor trucks, which are taxed 3 per cent. This tax brought the government a revenue of $140,000,000 for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1923, and during the same fiscal year the government expended on federal aid highways $72,000,000 Since the tax was first imposed in 1917, the government has collected $589,000,000 from sales of motor vehicles, but has expended only $265,000,-00- 0 on public highway construction. These figures show that the owners and operators of motor vehicles on the public highways are paying in federal taxes more than double the entire federal expenditure to construct and maintain these highways. The sugar companies of this state have started their money into circulation by issuing $4,OOU,UOO to beet growers as first payment which part payment for the beet crop this year, and which is said to net the farmers about $12,000,000. isj Price Conditions improving at Farnham test well of the Utah Oil & Refining company. rTT TTf t WWWWWWWW TT T T T T V All next week Starting Sunday, December 30 -- RALPH CLONINGER ; presents his own company In The fascinating story of a womans soul THE BIRD of PARADISE Return enagegement of Richard Walton Tullys wonderful Hawaiian romance.
