Show THE CITIZEN individuals who attempt to enlist their support of movements which may in any sense of the word be considered beyond the realms of strictly religious endeavors. And that there may be no opportunity of suspicion thereafter, let it be understood that any person occupy-- 0 ing a responsible official position in the church must resign his office, as a condition precedent to accepting a nomination for civic office. Until these things have been done, a large part of our citizens here will feel that the Sword of Damocles is suspended by a hair over their heads. While the feeling exists in Utah it will produce unfavorable opinions and criticisms in other states. . . The erection of a public bath house at Warm Springs was right but the expenditure of $400,000, double the amount voted by the people for that' purpose, amounts to almost criminal carelessness. Competent builders assert the bath house can be duplicated for less than half the amount. If this is so, it proves the gross ;ncompetency of the triumvirate, for which . they deserve ignominous defeat. q Neslen-Green-Burt- on erty Owner, will pay this bill, and if you elect the present city commission this indebtedness will be still increased. Thie present city commissioners have no way of reducing your taxes. They nave big political organizations they must keep intact, and it costs the taxpayers thousands of dollars to keep the machine going. Those who can afford it are not complaining, but The Citizen has yet to meet the first property owner that is not complaining. Our present conservative city commission has the paltry sum of $37,000 in the sinking fund towards meeting $1,500,000 in bonds before the 1925 taxes are collected. This is one of the serious problems the American party must face when elected. The present city . commissioner either negligently, carelessly or didnt care has entirely ignored, this matter. When the creditors present their bills for payment, what is the city going to do ? This is for you Mr. Taxpayer, to answer. The Salt Lake Telegram, in checking up tax figures, has endeavored to impartially show the people that there is a serious problem at hand. It must be corrected. It TAXATION. Taxation is one of the important matters before the. people at this time. The American party has come out on a platform to reduce your taxes. The question is asked, How can they do it? That is easy. If the American party wins, and judging from present appearances, it will win by a big majority, Tuesday, November 6, the first attention will be given to the automobile joy riding officials and employees. Mr. Taxpayer, do you know that you are paying over $700 per day for automobile maintenance? Why should you furnish seven passenger cars for city employees to ride in under pretense of business? The American party will bring grief to the joy riders. The taxpayers will reap the benefit. Big cuts can be made in all departments, and many of the minor offices can be consolidated and thousands of dollars can be saved annually, and yet greater improvements can be made than have been made in the past. The present city officials, Mayor Neslen, Herman H. Green and T. T. Burton, have been and are trying to show the people how economihal they have been during their, terms of office. Some of them have rushed into print with figures showing big tax reductions, but they have left off all the big items as has been proven without peradventure of a doubt in the columns of the Salt Lake Telegram. Mr. Taxpayer, if you will check back your tax notices for the past ten years, and especially the past four years, it will lie sufficient for your information, and you yourself positively know that your taxes have not been reduced. The present commissioners want to be upon their tax record, and their tax record is sufficient to defeat them and will defeat them at this .time. O The people have complained about their taxes and the lavish expenditures of moneys by their public servants, but their efforts to secure a business administration have been without avail. The people are now turning to the new party the American party for redress, and this party will keep its promises. Over 10,000 Mormons have left the city the past few years and have settled in the neighborhood of Los Angeles. The majority of them left here on account of high taxation. The exit of the mons became so strong that some of the church leaders admonished those remaining to not leave the state. Many Gentiles have also left to get away from high taxation and religion in business and Qilitics. With the American party in the field now all these abuses will be corrected. Tim people will know where their money goes and how it is spent. The money will not be shuffled around to hide certain expenditures, or rather to make certain improvements appear less costly than they actually are. The taxpayers of this city owe over $6,000,000. You, Mr. Prop re-elect- - ed 5 It shall be corrected. not a question what former officials have done. Why have not your present officials solved the problem of paying off our indebtedness and the consequent reduction, of taxation. Every year we are met with a little raise in tax rates. At the time it attracts very little attention but in the course of two or three years the mills roll into dollars and the property owner pays the bill or his roof is is sold over his head. 0 For that reason, Mr. Taxpayer, The Citizeij believes there is only one course to pursue, and that is the election of the American party candidates who are the only candidates pledged to give you a business administration in your municipal affairs and to reduce your taxes. PEACE AND PROSPERITY. Some of the timorous people of Salt Lake City have expressed opposition to the American party movement upon the theory that it will hurt the city and state to advertise to the world that we are not living in harmony. These people assert that our differences should be settled behind closed doors. There are many conclusive answers to these arguments. Our past history has demonstrated beyond cavil that the righteous demands of the people in Utah for a separation of church and state, have never resulted in injury to this state. Quite the contrary. Prosperity has invariably followed the success in Utah of the parties advocating the cause now espoused by the American party. Outside capital has invariably flowed into our state at such times. So long as the outside world feels that the affairs of state and business are dominated by the church, just so long will capital hesitate to enter our state. Our past history also demonstrates beyond cavil (as docs all history), that settlement of the great issue now being fought out, cannot be rightly and effectively adjusted behind closed doors. The principle involved is too sacred to American citizens to permit of either barter or a Solomon compromise. Rather does the American citizen listen to the wisdom and advice of that eloquent statesman, Edmund Burke, who exclaimed: WHERE THERE IS ABUSE, THERE OUGHT TO BE CLAMOUR, BECAUSE IT IS BETTER THAT OUR SLUMBERS BE BROKEN BY THE FIRE BELL THAN TO PERISH AMIDST THE FLAMES IN OUR BEDS. If we are to have peace and prosperity we must all work for the success of Galigher, Williams and Lawrence in the coming election and the success of the American party, for that road, and none other, leads to real and permanent peace and prosperity. All others are but mere shams and frauds. city ceinetary What do you think of the for the piece of extravagance, $22,500 expended for a mansion sexton? And this after they had been warned against such waste-fuse of the peoples money. Neslen-Green-Burt- on ul |
