Show THE CITIZEN INTERVENTION AIMLESS AND DANGEROUS MOVE Uncle Teds Stories Bed-Tim- es Make a Hit With AH Young Americans. Come right In here, Jack, . called his mother. "Just because it feels so warm is no reason why you are going to be running outside every five min- o utes without any hat on." "Ah, please mother," said Jack, just let me stay out a little while longer. Ill be careful.' Whats the matter now asked Uncle Ted as he arrived at the front gate for the first time in many months when it was still daylight. "Better mind your mother, Jack. I wish I had minded mine years ago on many, many things; but it seems we dont find out how wise mother is until too late. Ill tell you, continued Uncle Ted, lets compromise. Get your hat and coat, call Ruth and we can sit on the porch for a little while and Ill do my best to get your mind off running all over the neighborhood." Thatl be great, said Jack as he hurried into the house calling for his sister. It wasnt long before the three pals were comfortable and warm on the porch. I cant seem to get away from hav- ing arguments with people about our foreign policy, began Uncle Ted. I had so much of it today that I think Ill get the rest of it out of my system. Ever since President Harding presented his plan to join the world court before the senate just as it adjourned, so that no action could be taken but so the plan could be discussed throughout the country, I have been thinking about the foolish advice of some men concerning intervention in Europe. You know, France isnt having it so easy with her occupation of the German Ruhr district. For that reason if for no other I cannot understand those who say that it is the duty of the United States to intervene in European affairs to avert a new war. How could we mix up in it?" asked Jack. Thats just what I warn to know, Jack. If we should intervene how should we do it The only plan offered has been that we should call a big conference and recognize the bolshevik government of Russia. This would not cure the troubles of Europe. No matter how friendly we are to Europe we cannot expect Europe to change her ways for us any more than she should expect us to change our ways for her. We are different and always will be. What we as a nation might say at such a conference would matter little. Inviting Russia to sit around the table would not help France and Germany and those two countries at the present moment are the basis of Europes ills. If such a conference did not settle the quarrels of France and Germany it would be a failure which would mean that everything would be in a worse state that if the conference had never been called. That has been true of every conference held since November 11, 1918, with the exception of the one at Washington called by President Harding. Why, Uncle Ted," asked Ruth, What was the difference? The difference was just this, Ruth. The Washington conference was called for a definite and certain purpose. It was called to work out a plan whereby the great powers acting together, might safely reduce their navies, making a big long step toward world peace and incidentally reducing the taxes of the general public In those countries. It is the public wno pay for the battleships. With that purpose plainly put before them, the delegates to that conference knew what to do and they did it. But the other conferences! They met as an economic body with no specific purpose, and after long debate they ended In turmoil without having accomplished anything for the benefit of the world. I would like to have somebody tell me how we could intervene between France and Germany at the present time. What would we do? Guarantee the payment of the German debt so France would take her troops out of Germany and go home? There are just two things Europe wants the United States to do to cancel the war debts and join the League of Nations. The war was a European affair started by the jealousies and rivalries of European nations. So far as we were concerned, there would have been no war. Now the nations that originated the war do not want to pay their share of the cost of it, and want us to add $11,000,000,000 to what we have already paid. If they can get us into the league, they can unload a lot of their other troubles upon us. The nations that control the league would have it make decisions which we, as a member, would be expected to uphold, and they would leave us to bear the expense in money and men. The effort to get us into a conference in Europe or to get us to intervene in the quarrel between France and Germany has just one ultimate object to entangle us 7 some way so that we will have to go into the league. If we had nothing else to do, we might undertake to carry the burdens of Europe, but we have some difficulties of our own. In every state in the Union the people are complaining of heavy taxation. Some of the skilled laborers in cities are getting $10 to $15 a day while equally skilled men on farms are barely getting a living. Radicals are working individually and through organizations for the overthrow of our government. We have hundreds of . thousands of aliens amongst us who cannot read or speak our language and who are not familiar with our American system of government. We have enough, to do to care for the Europeans we have here without trying to care for the Europeans In Europe." I Public Sales pair V. S. The action of moisture on exposed surfaces of iron and steel and iron piping and roofing is distructive. That could be avoided in part by protecting iron against the action of moisture still more by substituting brass and copper for iron wherever possible.
