Show THE CITIZEN 10 WHO GOT THE MONEY? WAGES AND PROSPERITY. There is a definite relation between employment and prosperity. That there is a similar and almost identical relation between wages and prosperity is not so generally known. Hard times follow unemployment because of the decreased amount of money going "into the channels of trade. It is not the unemployment in itself that makes the hard times, but the decrease in the: amount of money spent. If pepjple .were well supplied with money, unemployment would have little effect on business conditions, because the money would still be spent. Anything that reduces the amount of money to be spent lessens the amount of business to be done whether that decrease comes from unemployment, ' from lowered wages or from other cause. This being true, it is very difficult for the average person to understand why the merchant and manufacturer should join with the professional (for revenue) antiunionist, who,' in his efforts to accomplish a' decrease inwages and a lengthening of hours, seeks to destroy .those organizations which have made good wages, reasonable hours and decent working conditions possible. The merchant or manufacturer joining in such a campaign is simply working to destroy bis "own business by helping to decrease the incomes of his customers. As a result of such a campaign conducted locally, thousands of the best customers of Salt Lake merchants and Utah manufacturers have bwv compelled to leave th state employment at living wages. The blame in this matter cannot be imputed to those who have left the state or to those who, in an effort to secure a restoration of normal conditions, have called attention to the matter. Those who have set industry by the ears with employers fighting their lifelong employee associates are solely responsible for this condition. Mr. John E. Edgerton, president of the National Association of Manufacturers, recently made this statement: The industrial payroll contributes more than any other factor to the determination of the purchasing power of the American people, and the national power is prosperitys purchasing weather vane. The most effective rallying cry of the professional antiunionist in gaining support for his cause has been - that "labor profiteered during the war; wages were simply outrageous. ... Of course nearly everyone who read the papers during and after war read stories of high wages received by working men, for some agencies made 9 a specialty of seeking instances of unusual earnings, writing them in half truths for the purpose of poisoning the public mind and laying the ground for getting support to their campaign to set employers to fighting their employees. For a long time they succeeded and in some localities they are still having a measure of success, as is amply demonstrated by the failure of certain communities to participate sections where industrial peaces But, disregarding the questioi whether or not labor did receive wages, what became of these Wages? If reducing wages below a living e Speedy or standard will hasten the return of prosperity, or is in any way essential to good business, then China should be the most prosperous of nations.
