Show THE CITIZEN 10 Nimrod Pleads for Public Playground at Strawberry , . Editor Citizen: There is a bill pending in Congress introduced by Representative Colton of. Utah effecting the Strawberry Valley, which is of interest to those who love the outdoor life. This bill proposes to increase the forest reserves in Wasatch and Uinta counties. Under the Reclamation Act of 1910 not only the waters that feed the Strawberry reservoir is to become the property of the water users, but the great- er part of the land of that valley as well is to pass into the hands of vate interests when certain payments have .been made. The Colton hill proposes to retain the land and have these lands "administered by the Secretary of Agriculture under all the laws, rules and regulations applicable to national forests, except the act to provide for the entry of agricultural forest reserves, ap-lands within-thproved June .11, 1906. If the Colton bill passes there will be a possibility for having Strawberry Valley set apart for a public park. The writer has believed for many years that this valley should be set apart for a health and pleasure resort for the people. In 1905 the Utah legislature hopeful that this might be done, created by law a Board of Park Commissioners to have supervision of this proposed park when and if it should be made a public park, and this law is still on our statute books. Certainly the idea was a good one for there is no spot in Utah more loved as a fishing, camping, and health play. ground than Strawberry Valley. It is located on two proposed national highways. Only a few hours ride by auto from Salt Lake City. During each summer the roads are lined with people going to and coming from this beautiful valley. There the skies are clear, the air is full of health and vigor and the nights are always cool and often during the hottest days in the valley of Salt Lake a thin coat of ice may be found in the morning on the campers wash basin in the invogorating climate of Strawberry. It, too, is the "fisherman's paradise of Utah. Should the lands of this valley fall into private hands and be fenced that would end this place as a fishing resort and campers, if any, would be compelled e . . . m . . - . pri- 9 to pay for even camping in the valley. If possible and without doing any injustice to the water users of the Strawberry valley, this place should be retained as a mountain park for the . citizens. It is perhaps true that even should the lands be fenced that fishermen might be allowed to wade the river flowing into the reservoir, hut experience has demonstrated that where are located on fenced ranchers streams that fishing soon becomes Ness building, by next Thursday, not later than the. noon hour. Dont hesitate there is no subscription, or other entangleing alliance encumbering this offer merely a boost for the home team. Thats all. And fishing in boats would become more and more a useless experiment. The writer talked with the Fish and Game Commissioner of Utah, who that Strawberry valley is a natural mountain park that should be preserved as a playground for the people. We Utahns are very and justly proud of Zion National Park, in southern Utah, famed for its wonderful scenery, but on account of its distance from Salt Lake City only a few visit this place as compared with the thousands who annually camp in the Strawberry valley, which is so easily and quickly reached. Accessibility is a big thing in favor of a park, and there is no other valley in the state left readily accessible to the majority of the people suitable for a mountain park that begins to compare with Strawberry. We trust that eventually something will be done without any injustice to private interests that will result in having the Strawberry valley lands preserved as a health, and recreation acpark for the people.. If this is complished it would prove to be a wonderful resource of our growing state. Respectfully, be-liv- es FISHERMAN. Two mothers! At last they understood!
