Ibanezs Masterpiece Attracts Throngs to Salt Lake Theatre. Perhaps no more stupendous film production has ever been successfully produced that June Mathis adaptation of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, now completing the first weeks run at the Salt Lake theatre. This stellar production was announced for a two weeks stay but the mighty crowds that have flocked to the big playhouse, filling every seat at each production, indicates that the management of the Salt Lake may conclude to give the movie fans an additional week in which to view this really marvelous picture. The Four Horsemen tells a marvelous story of the war period. It literally burns a picture of the horrors of armed strife into the brains of those who witness it. There is a brilliant and bewildering variety of detail which is worked out by a remarkably efficient and talented cast, each of the principals apparently having been carefully and ideally selected for their particular roles. The mechanical effects many entirely new to filmland help measureably to complete the illusions and to depict the tragic, mystical story in its true bearing upon the worlds war. The comparatively few flashes of humor are but mere sidelights woven into the mesh of the story that help somewhat to accentuate the somber power and tragic force of the authors theme. Briefly summarized the story of The Four Horsemen centers in the family and affairs of Madariaga, the Centaur, a Spaniard by birth, who left his native land to establish himself as a cattle king in the Argentine republic. He ha two daughters, Luisa and Elena, one of whom marries a Frenchman, the other a German, both being employed on the old Spaniards domains. The wife of the Frenchman has a son, Julio, who becomes the favorite of the Centaur and in whom are inculcated all the vices cherished by the fiery Spaniard; the daughter who wedded the German bears three sons, all of whom are reared according to approved German "kultur. The old man dies with his boots on, the great estate is divided between the French and the Gergan each takes his family to their respective countries and soon thereafter the world war opens, at which time there enters into the story Tchernoff, the Russian mystic. He it is who reads in the signs of the times the fulfillment of the prophecy of St. John the Divine, telling of the appearance on earth of the four horsemen, Conquest, Incidcnlal- War, Famine and Death. . 11 ly it is to be noted that the depiction of the agencies in allegorical form is made artistic and impressive. In Paris, Julio, who plays at being an artist, conceives an illicit passion for Marguerite Laurier, wife of a French senator, who is much older than she, and to whom her marriage was arranged by her parents. The young wife reciprocates the affection of the youth; but the conflict calls her husband to the front, where he loses his eyesight; then love of country and sense of obligation to her marriage vows awaken the true womans soul, and she strives to spend her remaining years in atonement. Alice Terry, as Marguerite Laurier, carries the most exacting role of the production with satisfying artistry throughout. Ranking next in point of importance comes Julio, the artist, who before the end of the conflict becomes soldier and hero. This character is in the hands of Rudolph Valen-tinehis work being on a plane equal to that of Miss Terrys. Julios father, Marchelo Desnoyers, is taken by Joseph Swickard, a screen artist of strength and power throughout the drama. The part of the Russian mystic is depicted by Rigel de Brulier, a role of difficulty, well handled. More than a score of additional characters have vital parts in the presentation and the general excellence of the cast is a matter for congratulation. In the sections of the film portraying wild gaiety and revelry, the spirit of laxity and license is clearly typi o, fied; in the scenes after the angels of destruction have spread their wings there is enough of gloom and horror ' j to sicken the soul. An orchestra of sixteen pieces, all Salt Lake players, under the baton of John H. Good, musical director of the company adds much to the effectiveness of the production; while tw6 interpolated and "appropriate solois sUng'by Mrs. June Evans of ' Salt Lake'1 also ' contribute to the artistic effect. . . -- GRAND OPERA COMING.
