Show ry THE CITIZEN 6 i i is compelled to talk of Debs and LaFollette for president. Circumfield of d stances have restricted the insurrectos to a paltry operation. The Forty-Eightcwere like little, wanton boys who swim on n bladders, but at length their pride has exploded under them (missing the Shakespearean text slightly) leaving them to the mercv of the rude tide of extremest radicalism. Railway workers, Nonpartisan Leaguers, the radicals and the parlor Bolsheviki are between the Communist party devil and the deep sea of the Republican and Democratic organizations. red-eye- rs high-blow- onc-big-unio- n,, THE IRISH PLANK The Democrats adopted an Irish plank, not because they wanted to but because they were compelled to, and like all grudging- gifts it is the least that could be given this side of zero. In fact, most ot the Irish sympathizers would have preferred no plank at all. By way of adding to the gaiety of the campaign we suggested some time ago that the convention express sympathy for the Irish republic and then declare war on it. That would have been more sensible than what was done. The plank expresses sympathy for the aspirations of Ireland for but within the limitations of international Had France expressed sympathy for the colonies within comity. the limitations of international comity Washington and La Fayette would not have stood side by side to receive the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. The declaration sounds ironic when it says that the great has received constant reiteration as principle of one of the chief objectives for which the country entered the war, and victory established this principle. The president abandoned the principle when he handed over - self-governme- nt, the 36,000,000 inhabitants of Shantung to Japan. The Democratic': away from 36,000,000 peo-- t treaty of Versailles takes pie. The Democratic convention indorses the treaty without the? dotting of an i or the crossing of a t, and then expresses sym-i patliy for the aspirations of Ireland for fat The Democrats, however, are to be commended for maintaining in not pledging themselves to take up the question their of Irish independence under the terms of the league covenant. That. ion indeed, would have been an unforgivable affront to the friends oi jle Ireland. By Article XI of the covenant the United States would have the; right to discuss the question with Great Britain, but according tnj Article X the United States would be compelled to preserve th6 territorial integrity and existing political independence of the Brit ish empire. The plank is a feeble compromise and, no doubt, the Democrats .; or even as a realize that it is worthless as a vote-gettself-governm- ent i self-governme- self-respe- nt. ct vote-saver- er 1 dcr : ZEST GROWS KEENER As the time for the convention nears the zest of the competition:' for the Republican gubernatorial nomination grows keener. There.: are many admirable candidates, but at present writing William of Ogden and George T. Odell of Salt Lake seem to be; slightly in the lead. Mr. Odell lias just completed a tour of a nuiiw her of the counties of the state and expressed himself as well pleased with the outlook. . self-determinat- ion We believe that, after mature thought, the Dayton News support the Democratic candidate. will The conventions tried to make the country safe for journalist? and safe from professors.
