Now he has the Moslems of Mesopotamia and of Egypt on his hands. Therefore, he must speak your ferocious Turk softly and must get down upon the prayer mat and turn his Christian eyes towird Mecca and Medina in worship. honest solution was not far to and, no doubt, the allies grasped it at the very beginning oi the diplomatic discussions. If the United States would not accept a mandate the only recourse would be the annihiliation of Turkey as a nation and the creation of at least one independent power in Asia THE Minor that is to say, Armenia. That solution should not be delayed. Armenia should be freed from the Turkish yoke and set up and fostered as an independent nation with full rights of sovereignty. But the allies, weakened financially almost to the point of bankruptcy, their veins bled white, look forward with fear to the policing of Asia Minor. From the north comes crashing down toward Constantinople and Asia Minor by way of the Caucasus the Bolshevik bear reeking with the bloo.1 of many conquests. The Turks see a new ally in the Bolsheviki and rejoice. They believe that the old game can be played perhaps many times yet. Against Great Britain and France, she will pit her remaining strength and the power of the Russian hordes. What are the allies to do? What will the United States do? OBSER VA TION PL A NE be included in the fockoning, for whether fighting at Flume or pleading in flaming phrases to the Latin mobs, DAnnunzio is a propagandist. The most glaring defect in the list,'& however, is the omission of the names of the inventors whose weapons and devices were used to wage the greatest of wars. The American who invented the caterpillar tractor and the British officer who, using the tractor as a base, devised the tank, are not among the nominees. But what are we to think of a list which makes no mention of the Americans who invented the submarine and the airplane? And if it is preposterous to prepare a list which does not include the names of the Wright brothers and Holland, It . is equally preposterous to complete the list without naming Diesel, the German inventor of the internal combusi tion engine; Curtiss, inventor of the hydroplane, and Marconi, inventor of wireless telegraphy. Certainly W. T. Unge, the Swedish inventor of the depth bomb, ought not to be overlooked. It may be argued with force that Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite and Glidden, the American inventor of the machine for making barb-wirare not to be included because their inventions were used in earlier wars. e, VIRTUOUS BLANK VERSE. Apparently, however, it has not occurred to the editor that some of the greatest men of the war died before the war began. A shallow paradox? Not at all. We take it for granted that no one will deny, for instance, that the inventor of the iron-claMonitor was was one of the ten greatest men of the American war of the states.
