Iiool Callahan. AND GARFI The Scenic Line WELLJ has rewritten with' power the most moving epic of the scriptures the Book of Job. No doubt the parables, the moral lessons as yell as the episodes of the bible have furnished ideas for many of our novelists, but I do not recall anyone who has followed the entire argument of one of the biblical books with such fidelity as has Mr. MR. Wells. TO And yet, he achieves this mastery of material in a thoroughly modern way, for The Undying Fire Where Copper in its personae, locale and treatment is as modern as The Four Horsemen The Servant in of the Apocalypse, The Third Floor The House or Back. On the other hand one must not seek in this work the conventional entertainment of the modern novel. "Job Hess, the counterpart of the biblical character, is a renowned educator who falls on evil days after making his school unique for its original methods of imparting history and Inculcating philosophy. Disaster comes in the form of a fire which causes the death of several students. As someone is culpable for the neglect which caused the conflagration the blame rests on Job Hess, the head master. Meantime, having confided his money to others, he has lost his fortune. With his wife, who now begins to make complaints and to show contempt for him, he retires to a cheap seaside resort for the vaca- tion. There he discovers that he is a victim of cancer. On the day set for the operation the trustees of the school, accompanied by Mr. Farr who has been chosen by them to be the new headmaster, arrive at the boarding house where the Hesses are stopping. he is about to go under , Although the knife Job, seeing that his lifes work will be undone by the unimaginative and utilitarian Farr, pulls himself together and proceeds to argue with the trustees who are what we in men. As a result all are soon far afield, discussing the old, old, question of the goodness of God, the mystery of good and evil and the significance of man and the universe. With wonderful freshness these problems are presented to us in trappings that stir our minds and hearts with a new interest and a new desire for satisfying solutions. Job, of course, runs the gamut of the plaints of his scriptural prototype. noble protest, every base Every whine, every reasoned argument, every irrational fling of that ancient kicker are reproduced and amplified by modern instances and lore from the arts and sciences. Job, if he could revist the glimpses of the moon would be lost in envy of the material gleaned by his modern rival from the four quarters, of the globe. He probably would want to begin the argument with Jehovah all over again, .feeling that he had been woefully handicapped by the limited information of his day. Asst. SALT LAKE Blind faith and shallow agnosticism alike fail to sway Job Hess. When the latest modes in spiritual solace are presented to him with mincing liyprocrisy he and the agnostic who comes to his aid laugh them out of court They find the opportunity to deride the spiritualism of Conan Doyle and Sir Oliver Lodge as the folly of credulous minds. And they set forth into other realms of thought, notably the Teutonic, which so recently astounded the world and still has it numbed and stunned. This is not to say that our modern Job solves the enduring problems better than, or even as well ' as, the bibCn the contrary, vrhen lical Job. job Hess passes from attack to exl- planation and divination, he decidedly weakens his case and becomes, at times, tawdry and squalid. Believing in immortality, Job Hess proceeds to crush his antagonists and then to set up his own God, who differs considerably from the Deity as represented Still we by orthodox Christianity. Tel.
