Beckwith, Sr., editor of the Millard County Chronicle, hai a second article in lent week a bane of his wicr which is given below. William J. Starley, manager of D. Stevens and Co., taught school in Roosevelt. When he left there, he eame out by auto via Nine Mile eanyon. It was during a bad rain. Bill says they had an old, nearly Worn out Model T Ford, and that eutrh time they came to a mud puddle, Bill and the other male passenger would clamber out, push the old ear across a bad place, get over shoe tops in mud, besides being drenched in the rain, and bespattered with elay from head to foot Bill says he and this traveling man, single handed, unaided and alone, ear the full length of Sashed that eanyon or at least it seemed that long. And I said, Bill, did you see any of the ancient Indian petroglyphsf Navi But I can tell you from memory every mud puddle on the oreek, just how long, how wide and how deep. And just what push it look to get the old rattletrap through each one of them. Of that I have a vivid memory. I spoke last week about some of the interesting glyphs, and wish to add a little mors. In one of the groups, a man stands in' a striking attitude, aetion typified very realistically, with a shield in his shield. hand, a small round target-lik-e The photo we took of it shows plainly. I am especially interested in the subject of shields, herauae of the very interesting find of Bishop E. I. Pifetol at Torrey, of three buffalo-hid- e shields, which Prof. A. A. Kerr said he thought were of Pueblo origin. He eaid he thought they might be; of an age of four to nine hundred year. They arc not basketmaker, he thought After seeing those shields (which t.the time I thought possibly a ceremonial shield and not for actual warfare I wanted to see a design of the abprignee using a shield. Bo the Nine Mile group filla the need very well. He ia certainly wear-ishield, but whether for a or for warfare, that one .cries k cere-ndni- al of .figures does not completely answer. Then there were three large shields painted upon a rock on the west side of Cotton wood eanyon, not far from itai mouth. One was in two portions, aorto speak a sector or are of the euree at the top, was painted in a dull, somewhat dim red paint. The remainder of the eircle below that apan, was ia white. The center shield of the trio was oqipoaed of two sectors of a eircle, the flat aide .of which wAs a vertical pair of linfg, enclosing within them circle in the center bea. bpgs-Iik- e tween the upright arcs. This filled out in white, not outlined. The third shield, was a white, wide disc, with a figure of a man in the water space, with rays or zigzags radiating from him in two parallel rows. The other design painted on the kwh included a big red deer, within Mommy Cave. It locked some of it lege, bnt then who const was protected from the weather and was still plain, distinct and was weiyr.easy to photograph. In fact, I have my best results in photographing; objects in shade, rather than in full bright sun. jj. rainbow was painted in black. I wanted' that especially in my collee-tjoi- ) of photos, but somehow, it ia missing. I wonder if I left a film pack hy the side of a rock in Cottonwood uanyon,. Another painted design was nf a deer, without head, in red, and by its side a deer in green paint, with antlers plainly denoted. There was a hand in red; and a bear paw in red, both interesting. Then there were the big slender, robed figures, long and slim, almost giant-likwhich I wish to think may possibly be the Shalako impersonators men dressed in long robes, taller than ordinary, who at that drama, represent the Shalako gods. As for a spiral, there was a liean-tt- y incised on the rucks; regular, deep .mt. well made, and photographs exceptionally well. "One design I took on first glanre in lie a rabbit silting, with ita long ears. Whatever it is, it is well done and Shows the animal on the proper slant of a rabbit sitting. It may 'not be so intended. Another series of designs that bespoke our interest, were a number of groups etched in dots. The whole figure was outlined in tiny dots. .And on some, to one side, a panel 'Which goes by the name of a count v r calendar marker. That is, by the inse of dots regularly plamnl, it 'limds to the supposition tnnt so many dots' murk a count of some kind, eith-r"in things or days. There are only two that I am sure of in Clear Creek canyon. One that I have a print ,of from down on the Colorado. C Hubbtrd, Empress Eugene At an early hour thia morning a couple of deer ran serosa the Spanish Fork eanyon highway in front of the automobile of W. E. Olsen, Eureka agent for the Denver and Rio Orsnde Western railway, and one of the animals, a full grown doe, was badly injured and bad to be killed, says the Eureka Reporter of the 30th. Olsen states that he had nude a trip to Colton for consultation with the railroad agent there, and was on hia way back to Eureka. As he was rounding a curve on the highway, about seven miles to the cast of Thistle, two deer eame suddenly into view and while he made every effort to prevent striking them one was hit by the bumper and ita back broken. After dragging the deer off the road, Olsen proceeded on to Thistle and reported the accident The officer at that place stated that he would send someone out to bring in the carcass of the deer which likely would be sold for the benefit of tne state fish and game department On his return to Eureka,' at about 7:30 this morning, Olsen prepared a brief report of the mishap and sent it on through to the fish and game department headquarters at Salt Lake City. Two or three accidents of a similar nature have taken place in Utah daring recent months. The chamber of commerce has been granted permission to kill some of the buffalo in Monument eanyon for the barbecue for there are too many in the herd of fourteen. It ia nrged that deer, elk and antelope replace the buffalo. In the evening a street carnival will bo the attraction. Booths will line the streets for three blocks and a stage will he erected at each intersection so that the entertainment will continue during the entire evening. A street dance and a danee at Lincoln park auditorium will dose the celebration which is designed to be the greatest of all times. One bird-lik- e object, elsewhere, which seems to have a tail, partly extended, a little similar to the tail on a peacock when but. extended out behind. The design is baffling, and whether a bird or not, it ia interesting. As to ' snakes, there is Great Plumed Serpent, if such can he the case, for the snake has very distinct honis or plumes. It is a rather broad jump from conjectural suake worship In Utah to the Great Plumed Ser-poeult in Mexieo, which dominated the architectural motive of so many of Mexican buildings. On the other hand it may just be a variant of the well known southern Horned Rattlesnake," or, the man may simply have intendod to denote bv implication the fangs, even if not placed right for that use. It is still a matter for farther study. Those who resd extensively of the snake reremonica by Fewfccs and others, are more or less predisposed to arrept a degree of infiltration of the Great Plumed Serpent eult in Zuni and in the Hop! ritual. But how much it is derived from Mexieo or wholly an independent growth may be subject of discussion. And finally, in the group of men shooting at deer, which to me was most interesting, I notice that the major part of the deer have a line extending from one deer to a near lart of the next, often by extension of the tail. And especially an extension of the nusc. The design was on a shiny rock, which reflected the light so intensely that the resultant print is objectionable. Had it been taken in the shade, however, all that would have been overcome. Nine Mile canyon seems to hold more interest than docs Clear Creek canyon and especially so in the house ruins, mummies and workmanship of the aboriginecs basketry, funerary customs evidenced in the burial of the dead, as well as in the designs upon the rocks. I will probably again to Nino pi obvious Mile and eorreet the photographic errors I was guilty of by negligence, which I should easily overcome by more rare, and taking greater time, and a suitable time to each subject.
