E. Hammond, member of the state board of equalisation, to Governor George H. Don. - Present valuation is about to $726-000,00- 0. Hammond, acting for E. H. Snow, chairman of the board, replied Wednesday to a letter from the governors office. Snow is in St George for the Christmas holidays. Hammond was asked to calculate the probable revenue to the state general fund for the operations of the state goVemment from the tax if it remains at its ant figure, the levy being the maximal allowed. under the constitution. After January 1, sneh intangibles as an now assessed will not be subto ject to the general property tax the adoption ny the people of Constitutional Amendment No. 2. Total of these on the amassment rplls, however, has never been very with the exception of the plaeed on hank shares. Of late the valuation of bank shares has reduced to 35 per eent of the figure. By reason of the adoption of the amendment, all intangibles will be separately assessed and taxed or exempted from taxation. The state tax rate for general fund purposes, as well as the other state tax levies allowed against tangible property, and all municipal, county and school levies, will in the future apply only to the tangible property; although any revena derived . from taxes plaeed against the intangible property, either through income taxes or otherwise, will eome as revenues to the stale general fund and to the state district school fund. Figures mentioned in Hammonds letter are the valuations the board members expeet to be plaeed on the tangible property in Utah, for the next two yean. I, CHARLES RUGGER! ent the usessed valuation of the eon-te- nt of the metalliferous mines, val- ued at three times the net proceeds for 1929, is shout $97,000,000. Owing to the fact that the mine production has been curtailed during practically all of 1930, and the further fact that the gross yield of the producing mines doesnt much more than pay operating expenses, the board estimates a reduction of at least. about $90,000-00in the assessed valuation of mines alone. Since the depression, however, has not hit the mines alone, other valuations may show ana decrease. Decreases on the individual elasses may to comparatively small, yet even a reduction of 1 per cent, on real estate alone would decrease the value of the property by in round numbers. Figures for 1932, Hammond said, are based on the theory that the bottom of the depression is about reached, and that then will to eome tendency for values to resumo their normal npward trend in that year. From these aeaaaaed valuations, applying the maximum state general fundlevy of 2.4 mills, and following 8 per eent for loes in collection, and an additional 28 per eent, under the statute for maintenance of institutions of higher education, Hammond finds the general fund revena in 1931 would amount to $1,047,000, end for 1932, $1,089,000; or in the aggregate, $2,137,000 for the biennium. This compares with an estimated revena from this source of about for the biennium, as figured out recently by Ivor Ajax, state auditor, who used as his basis an estimated value of the state of $650,000,000 1931 and $710,000,000. for . t Basket of Grapes PERCY DOUBLE ys Hero are the only pictures published of the throe men who made a successful eseepe from the Carbon jail December 23. Demands on that revenue under the budget requests of the varions departments, however, will also to greater. The new state institution, the state training school at American Fork, alone is asking about $285,000 for the biennium, this being an entirely aw demand on the state general fund.
