Show THURSDAY. DSOSMBIR 1H Coast to Coast System Now Reality An interlocking system of railroad, tretching from coast to coast and from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, was virtually under the control of the powerful Van Sweringen brothers of Cleveland today as a result of an interstate commerce commission decision, says a United Press dispatch of the 12th. The commissions decision was an approval of the acquisition of the Denver and Rio Grande Western, giv- Sweringen-eontrolle- the Rocky mountains from Denver ' Bali Lake City. j tQ Last Obstacle Removed. All that stood in the way of the Van Sweringens realizing their great dream to control a transcontinental railway system, was the acquisition of control of the Western Pacific, running from Salt Lake City to San Francisco and often dubbed the rail" road that doesnt go anywhere obstacle this in now Dut is last process of being' removed by the ambitious brothers, Orris P. and Morris J. Van Sweringen, who entered the railroad game from the real estate business only a little more than a decade ago. They now have an agreement of some sort with the Western Pacific and are reported to have begun negotiations looking toward purchase of a controlling interest in the western carrier. Each Own Fifty Per Cent. The Missouri Pacific and the Western Pacific each own 50 per cent of the stock of the Denver and Rio Grande Western and the commission decision today gives the two joint control in the Denver and Salt Lake. The latter road, by controlling the new Moffat tunnel under the continental divide, has the shortest route from Denver to Salt Lake City, long the objective of the Missouri Pacific and other western carriers. Dot-aeBy means of the tunnel and the cutoff, which the commission said the Denver and Rio Grande West, era must build in order to acquire the Denver and Salt Lake, the Missouri Pacific is given the edge over competing carriers running to the Pacific coast Construction of tho cutoff, linking the two carriers west of the divide, must he begun within six months after the commission places in effect todays decision. The two brothers now own, control, or are substantially interested in railroads extending from New Vork to Salt Lake City, with the Western Pacific running from there into San Francisco. These carriers follow: The Erie railroad, from New York City to Buffalo; the Nickel Plate, from Buffalo to St. Louis; the Missouri Pacific, from St. Louis to Pueh. lo, Colo.; the Denver and Rio Grande Western; the Denver and Salt Lake, from Pneblo to Denver and through to Salt Lake City. The Western Pacific, last link in the transcontinental system, is assigned to the Missouri Pacific under the interstate commerce Commission as final railroad consolidation plan. And thus, if that plan ever becomes law, as has been suggested to congress, the dream of the Van Sweringens will ro have become to any terminal of similar six of any railrou of the west. , The new railroad service unit is acof laid with eight tracks, capable commodating sixteen of the largest locomotives in service on the road. In addition, a complete and np to date machine shop will be established lo handle all repairs of the engines assigned to this terminal. At the presenent time there are twenty-tw- o divison the service in Helper gines ion, in addition to those scheduled . here on through trains. Government After Coal Land Royalties Demands for payment of delinquent rentals and royalties on government - Grand Junction Voices Protest to Denver The Grand Junction j Chamber of Commerce, together with other local busi-les- s :ivie organizations and leading firms, is laying plans for an or- ganized protest against the action of he Denver Chamber of Commerce in tuthorizing its highway committee to levote all its future efforts toward mprovement of U. S. Highway No. 10, otherwise known as the Victory tighway. This route passes through lorthcrn Colorado, westward from Denver to Salt Lake City, says last Saturdays Grand Junction Sentinel. Belief that the Denver Chamber of Commerce has been misled relative lo he main highways of western Colo-ad- o is expressed by those making ilans for an organized protest against iuch action, despite announcement by he Denver chamber that this action ras taken after full and detailed of the importance of this nad, not only from the standpoint of Denver but of the entire state. In considering the western Colorado lighways most deserving of improve-neon a large scale. Secretary W. 11. Wood of the Grand Junction Chamber of Comnierce today pointed tut, the Denver chamber has evidenU y overlooked entirely the interests if the western slope itself, together vith several factors having impor-;abearing on tourist travel. That portion of the Victory highway west of Denver, Secretary Wood further stated, passes through one of die most sparsely populated portions if Colorado, so that only a very small proportion of the people of the state could derive direct benefits from its improvement at the expense of the other main highways of the western slope. He expressed belief that the directness of the Victory route between Denver and eastern points had been instrumental in prejudicing the favor of the Denver chamber, and that loo little real consideration had been given by that body to the route west The state of Utah is now expending large sums for permanent improvement of that portion of U. 8. Highway No. 50, lying in eastern Utah, secretary Wood added. This route passes through Grand Junction, Delta, and Montrose, and is joined at Grand Junction by U. S. No. 40 south. The latter route is now being improved greatly by construction of the new oanyon road between Cameo and Pe Beque and $300,000 has been allotted for improvements between Rifle and Glenwood Springs. With such improvements under way and more needed on theses routes, it would be foolhardy for Denver to advocate limitation of the major highway improvement program to the Victory route, local business men feel. The Denver chamber has also overlooked, it is believed here, the dependence of the Victory highway on Berthoud pass, one of the higher crossings of the Continental Divide in the state. The Victory route west of Denver, they contend, can never he route as is posmade such an sible by wav of the Tennessee pass or the other low passes leading into this on nt nt . coal land leases amounting to approximately $75,000 are being made by ihe federal land office upon fifteen Utah coal companies, Eli F. Taylor, register of the land office, stated Friday. In cases where a satisfactory settlement is not made in the specified time the bonding companies will be called upon for the payment of the bonds, he said.
