Hearts Club writ- ten about the importance of knowing the rules and conventions of Bridge. Such knowledge undoubtedly is of prime importance. A proper understanding between partners of the conventions of bidding and play makes better Bridge and more pleasant relations with one's partners, but. every player should realise that there are exceptions to dl Yules.. A recent book on Auction expresses the point very - well: One aspiring to beams an expert player muat remember this important axiom -- Than is no smr nor must in Auction Bridge. That ia, no rule is too good to be broken when the proper The player who knows best when and how to dispense with a rule, knows' best how. to play the gams. But one thing must never be bverlooked. The p.ayer must somewhere, somehow, have burned the application of the rule he is breaking, before he attempt to break it. ' But don't let 100 aces'influence you to ' bid an unsound no trump rather than a sound major the suit is such a strong one that game is a certainty. , On the other band, dont bid si weak major suit in preference to a sound no trump, especially when the band contains 100 acee. Ail pass the no trump bid and A opens the four of dubs. The play of this hand ia instructive alao, so should be carefully noted. The fact that A leads the four of dubs, the fourth best of his long suit; and .that the deuce and trey of dubs are in the dummy, hand show that A haa only four clubs. Therefore Z should win the first dub trick with the ace and set his heart suit. He can afford to lose one heart and three club tricks. Played in. this way, Y Z will make one club, four heart, three apade pad one diamond tricks or three oU, gems and rubber. Learn to count your tricks ' and plan the play of the hind before 'yon play to the first trick. It will win yon many game and rubber. There ia another case when - motions should be discarded. That always should be played at a suit is one of the recognised conventions of the game; but sometimes there is n better bid, and the following hand ia a good illustration: the school. I , .v Hearts K, 9, 7, 4 Clubs 7,6,2 Diamonds A, Q, J K, 10, 7 Spades No score, rubber game. Z dealt, bid one no trump and all pasaed. A opened , the five of spadea, Y played the four,' B the nine and Z won tne trick with the ten of spades. How should Z plan the play of the hand? Solution: Z should take four rounds of diamonds, winning the third diamond trick in Y's hand with the king so that he can play the last diamond and thus force discards. The important suit, to find out about is toe heart suit, for if Z takes the wrong finesse, he not only will lose game but alaq may not even make hi bid. . A and B now have two set-u- p suits, chibs and spades, so Z cannot permit either A or B to get the lead. On the ten of diamonds, B discards n spade and A a heart so Z decides that B must have the queen of hearts. If he also haa the ten, Z cannot go game but, if A has the ten, then Z can go game aa he can catch B'S queen. Aa n matter of fact, A held the ten and B the queen, so Zs fine play enabled him to make game on a band that most players would lose because they would fine tee the heart toward the ace jark rather than first coax discards and thus locate the queen. Be on the lookout for such opportunities. j -- -. i','( . 'v" lilt HMMH V:EQUjrniEfm- IIHMtM - - ;V': ; 1 ' V it t listrial Arts Banding v j ; . Spda - '. 7 - tnooessfuL . His band-- however, ia not strong in either of his partner's suits' and yet is very strong in spades and diamonds.
