The (actors directly ksnhi-aibl- e for this improvement were the introduction of a -- landarized metliml of shooting mid IdastiiiK, closer intnuluelion of a cart ridge of smaller diameter ami the use of an air apnea around the cartridge and the cutting down of the exidosivc rharge. The bureau is invest igating the fundamental factors in breukiiiK down coal at the face, which govern the production of lump in typirnl mines workinK different heils. The bureau recently conducted tests on methods of blastiiiK anil use of different explosives in a mine workinK the Pittsburg bed in Pennsylvania. These shown! that the use of a eart ridge of smaller diameter than that used in mine practice resulted in an increase r 5 ier cent in the amount of lump lamping over a one and inch har screen with a reduction of X! fier cent by weight in amount of explosive required. On the other hand they found that on reducing the weight of charge 20 per cent, and using the enrl ridge of huger diameter, the round would not throw down the coal satisfaetiiril'. Experiments with the "snubbing" showed a similar improvement in quantity of lumn and the coal that was blasted rolled forward into the working place. However, in receii. tests at another mine where the product had different physical characteristics snubbing did nut always result in the eoal rolling forward, on wccount of clinging to ribs, and was not found to he an advantage. Therefore the bureau engineers recommend that tests be made before deciding upon the adoption of snubbing in a particular mine. The use of an air spare in Front of the rharge was found to inn-easthe quantity of one and lump. The greatest amount f bmp ofitaineil in the tests wus by a combination of air spacing and snubbing, by which means then1 was m 7.4 per cent increase in lump and u 31 derrense in the weight of the explosive rharge.
