They were informed that plans for a steel span a hundred feet long have been submitted to the bureau of public mads for approval, this being undertaken as a federal aid project. The agreement, according to the state office records, had been forwarded to the county, for action by the eounty commissioners on October 16th, but that body said it had not been brought to their attention. agreeSigning of the ment, under which the eounty to furnish a fourth of the cost eon-trac- ts Price, Utah LOT FOR SALE feel frontage hy two hundred fourtaen ani a half la depth. As soon as the latters signature has been attached it is thought that the state will be ready to advertise for bids. The Carbon officials also agreed to get .state and county records as to the state highway fund into reconcilement as suggested in the recent audit of the eounty s state road accounts made by It. C. Smith, sieciul auditor. The nes result of this is a benefit to the eounty general fund by a credit of about thirty-seve- n hundred dollars now with the countys state road fund. The Carbon officials proposed tlm a federal aid project be initiated from the west end of the Price to Castle Gate pavement on to the Utah eounty line, connecting with the Spanish Fork Canyon road in Utah near Soldier Summit They were told that all federal road funds now apportioned, to Utah under congressional action have been budgeted. E TO TAP ROOTS OF TRADE Hie Bun 8peciel Service. WASHINGTON, D. C., Nov. 2. The postal service of public highways in the United States has passed the million miles mark, according to a statement just issued by the American Association of State Highway Officials. In delivering mail to approximately thirty million individuals residing on rural routes 1,205,572 miles of highway are used every day. "Notwithstanding the extent to which rural delivery has grown," says the statement, "there are more than fourteen million patrons to be added as soon aa the service ean be extended, and this," say the officials, "in the face of the fact that Uncle Sam is with the states in the construction of only about two hundred thousand miles of road or more than a million miles less thin he is actually using." This point has been brought out, according to the highway statement, to show the wellnigh universal relationship which highways hold to the pub-li- e at large and partieurlarly to commercial centers of the country where a vast amount of business is conducted by mail. If the farflung lines of highway communication, according to the statement, were not kept open eommerre in New York and in other states where large eities are located would soon find the tap roots of their trade effected with the result that their boasted revenue totals would show a corresponding drop, thus proving again that even cities are concern Miners ani Shippers of the Celebrated Spring Canyon Coal Mlnaa nt STRING CANYON, UTAH General Offices, 817 Newborns Building. Salt Lake City, Utah ed in the year around service of high' ways, however far distant they may be located. "Furthermore," the statement then adds, "one of the three elements usee hy the federal government in the dis triliution of funds to states for roads is the mileage of post roads used in each state fur the rural mail delivery. Rome people have been laboring under the impression that federal funds go to states according to their total roa mileage when it is the government use of roads only that is taken into eon' sideration." Further inquire on the part of state highway officials out the faet that "in the past five years, through the improvemen of roads, the postoffiet departmen has been able to add fifteen hundrei and fifty new rural routes and in doing so mail service has been rxtendei to 226,300 families. This improvement of the highways has also enabled the postal department to lengthen the hundred and mileage of twenty-fou-r forty-nin- e routes already in existence." The highway statement concludes by calling attention to the faet that "the ordinary length of a rural route is twenty-fou- r miles, and where roads are not improved this ia an allday job, but by improvement Unele Sam has been able to lengthen the routes and thereby give additional service to a number of families without additional cost and still enable the carrier to deliver the mail in half the time required on rural routes ten years ago."
