Says the bulletin: About three years ago, according to Director Reed of the bureau of mines, the bureau acceded to an appeal of the Utah authorities to permit three federal employes to inspect the coal mines of Utah. The state authorities had only one inspector and he was advanced in years. They explained this situation as due to lack of funds. The result has been that the federal bureau has been the target for coniplaintsj it is said, anu state officials utilizing the federal inspection as a convenient alibi are prone to blame their wicked partner when criticisms are made of insee-tionConsequently, notice 1ms been served on Utah tlmt it is up to the present state legislature to appropriate funds sufficient to employ her own inspectors. The federal men are retiring from the role of state inspectors. Safety Director Reed adds that only in s few states do they suffer from a shortage of coni mine inspectors. Even those where there is not a decided shortage the quality is not always par. Many inspectors are too old to go down into the mines and others are unqualified for the work. s. On Saturday last a mandate was received by the federal officials at Salt Lake City from the Eighth Circuit eourt of appeals affirming the judgment of the local federal eourt in refusing Ijouia Bell and Velma Houston of l'riee a new trial. The two were eonvirted last April of violation of the prohibition lajw and Bell received a sentence of two months in the county jail Ilia companion was given a four months sentence. Both will have to begin serving their time within thirty days, according to Edward M. Morrissey, assistant United States district attorney. No doubt many people if asked to name the lowest point in Utah would answer Salt Lake, which is the remnant of the great prehistoric Lake Bonneville, a body of fresh water that covered a very large area. The lowest point, however, is not Salt Lake, but Beaver Dam Creek in Washington county, which is two thousand feet above sea level, according to the department of the interior geological survey. Utah lias an approximate mean elevation of 6100 feet, which is exceeded only bv that of Colorado, 6800 feet, and Wyoming, 6700. The highest point whose elevation has been exactly determined is Kings I'enk out in Wasatch county, which is 13,408 feet almve sea level. Utah.
