For the Beven days ending with December Gth the mines of Utah worked 54.1 per cent of fulltime capaeity. Their total losses from all causes totaled 45.7; mine disability, 0.0, and no market, 45.3 per rent. During the same period those of Colorado went 57.0. Reports for New Mexico and Wyoming are not complete. For the country over the rate of production for soft coal changed but little in the 'week of December 13th and appears to have found a level near the 10,700,-00-0 tons mark. Preliminary estimates place the output at 10,723,000 net tons, sn increase of 111,000. Production of soft during the first two hundred and ninety-thre- e working days of the calendar year (1924) was 444,- 520.000 net tons. From the viewpoint of soft production this year stands far behind each of those of industrial activity. In considering these figures, however, it should lie remembered that a considerable part of the output in those years was added- to storage, whereas during the present year coal has flowed steadily out of storkge. Compared with 1010 there has been an increase in production of about 3.- 500.000 tons, and with the years 1021 was and 1022 when production sharply enrtailed by an acute industrial depression and a miners strike of long duration there has been an million tons. increase of forty-si- x Better Demand West. The principal fact revealed by the mine operators reports for the week ended December 0th is that for the country as a whole there was practically no change in conditions at the soft coal mines during the last two weeks. The observance of the holiday obscured conditions in the week of Thanksgiving Day and more accurate measure of the present situation may be had bv comparison with the most recent fulltime week when prod net ion was not interrupted bv nnnsnal 'Comparison with the reports the week ended November 22d . for shows many significant changes in the figures for several fields. Withdraw-. al or demand for the lake trade acrom-panied the approaching elose of the season of navaeatinn and was clearly diseernahle in the reports from Northern and Central Ohio, the Panhandle and Fairmont districts of West Virginia and Northeastern and Southeastern Kentucky. Tn New River and Pocahontas the decline in lake business was more than offset by increasing activity at tidewater and there were appreciable gains in operating time at the mines in those districts. Colder weather in the states west of the Mississippi was reflected by a greater demand, which permitted' general increases in running time. Coke aud Anthracite. Production of beehive coke continued to improve in the week ended December 13th. Estimates of the total output are 192,000 tons, an increase of 18,000 or more than 10 per cent. The records show that this was the largest weekly output, since the first of May. The present rate of production, however, is still 20 per cent below that prevailing a year ago. Output in the Connollsville region was .marked. by ;a sharp gain and totaled 141,200 toils. While the gain was shar-- ' ed by both the furnace and merchant 'plants, the former showed a much larger increase in output. Cumulative production of beehive during the present year to December 13th stood at 9,134,000 net tons. The production of anthracite declined to 1.772,000 net tons in the week ended December 13th. .This decrease of forty-tw- o thousand tons appears to have hern dne largely to the celebration of a church holiday on December 8th and shipments on that day were but little more than half a normal Mondays loadings. Work wns resumed promptloadings ly on Tuesday and the total exceeded on the five days remaining somewhat those of the same dnysof the preceding week. Comparison with the corresponding week of 1023 shows that the present level of wenklv production is a hundred and seventy-fiv- e thousand tons below that of last year.
