CARBON HOOPSTERS HAKE GOOD IN STATE MEET Carbon basketball team put in a strenuous timd at the state tournament during the closing days of last week. Not a man on the squad had ever been in a state meet previously. Coached by Leonard Hoisington, athletie instructor at the local high school, the boys had swept through the Eastern Utah division without losing a game. This gave them the championship of the five counties of Carbon, Emery, Grand, San Juan and Uintah. In order to win thia place the locals had played against Moab, Emery Stake academy, Castle Dale Central, Ferron and Huntington, but no game had been had with the Uintah team because of the bad condition of the roads leading out to the Buin. Given a great send-of- f last week on Tuesday morning when a big following accompanied them to the early morning tram, the team arrived in Salt Lake City full of confidence and fighting spirit. The tournament was made up of sixteen teams, all from schools in Utah except one, which was from Preston, just over the Idaho line, but this town in evTHE BANK COMMISSIONER OF THE STATE OF but its position over the bounerything UTAH OF THE dary really belongs to Utah. The fourth game was against American Fork. These boys, in ordeT to gain the title of champions in the Alpine di virion, had been obliged to beat Lehi in the division play. With three games won in a row iu the tournament, this team, had it beaten Carfor bon, would have been runner-u- p the state championship. At the end o the regular periods Carbon ami American Fork were tied. This was the first game in the state meet which had required extra play for a decision. The Carbon quintet was on the victors end with a score of 27 to 26. Boys Win Fifth Place. The final game for the state championship was between Springville and Dixie, both teams having four wins without a defeat.
