Strong Pressure That Rule No Political Appointments Be Made Is Enforced Several Important Jobs In Utah Involved, and Changes Now Under Way Losing Headway. According to s Tribune dispatch from Washington, D. C., under date of Aug. Pth, obstacles have arisen which, for the time at least, seem to have checked the ousting of Demncratie federal officials in Utah and other states pri- or to the expiration of their terms, and there ia an air of mystery alxiut . recent happenings regarding some of the Utah positions. Inquiry discloses that Senator King had probably been retqtonsible for blocking the appointment of Mrs. Jennie P. Miisser as collector of customs, for when he learned ef the movement to oust Mrs. It. K. L. Collier he went directly to Secretary Mellon and entered vigorous protest. Senator King on that occasion told the secretary there was no justification, other than silitiral. fur removing Mrs. Collier or forcing her out, and, so far as lay within his jsiwer, aid he would prevent the turning over of this office to Mrs. Musser or to anyone else until Mrs. Collier's four-yeterm expires May 4, 1924. The senator said he could not, of course, prevent the president from nominating Mrs. Musser, but if the nomination reached the senate he would use his influence to prevent her confirmation, and in this way retain Mrs. lier in office aa king as his fight was successful. Just prior to the senators call on Secretary Mellon, the treasury detriment had made out the commission of Mrs. Musser as collector of customs and had sent it to the White House, but the appointment got no further. Whether it was recalled by Secretary Mellon after the call from Senator King or whether it has since been held np at the White House ran-nbe learned. At any rate, Mrs. ar ot Musser 's aiipointmcnt is being delayed somewhere in the administration. These Will Likely Stick. Today inquiry was made at the interior defiartment to ascertain whether Surveyor General I. E. Thoresen, Register Gould B. Blakely and Receiver II. C. Jex of the Salt Lake City land office had tendered their resignations, as requested last week by the detriment. The first information was thst no resignation had lieen received, and this was followed by tbe statement that the resignations of these officials had not been requested by tbe department. This information came from the identical official who, less than a week ago, announced thst sll three of (he land office officials had been asked by letter to send in their resignations. Pressed for an explanation of these conflicting statements, the official avoided all direct questions, but said Secretary Fall had laid down the rule that ,except for sufficient cause, land offieials appointed for definite terms should lie allowed to serve out their terms, and that not resignations shrfuld lie demanded solely to create their terms, and that no resignations This rale, it was said, is being rigidly observed, except in eases where it is shown that President Wilson ousted republicans at the opening of his administration and before the expiration ef their terms. In the case of Blakely and Jex no such exception exists, and the statement was made that lliev will gw COOKING RIGHT AT THE FMRjqDE 15 ljfl NilNSIMIPlltlF EKO THEATRE i FRIDAY, AUGUST 1J. FRIDAY. Fox, who ia connected with a wild west" show which is soon to put on a festival at Ogden, found the object of his quest and purchased one of the stages formerly running nut of Price to the Uintah Basin. It was Foxs daughter, Hope Fox, who as Miss Utah" rode up the steps of the eapitol building in Salt Lake City recently to deliver to Governor Charles K. Mabey an invitation to attend the show. Pictures of thia event are being shown in the Salt Lake City movie houses this week. The Fox family was among the early settlers, end have been cattlemen and pioneers in Wyoming and Utah for over fifty years. The elder Fox was present when the transcontinental railroad was completed, and the son, who buys the stage coach, was marshal of the day at the celebration of that event in Ogden a couple of years ago. This old stage will lie used behind a team to pnt on a mimic running fight between a load of tenderfeet" snd'In-dian- s at the Ogden show, and while in its actual days of oieralion it saw many thrilling adventures, these mimic reproductions will probably fur outstrip any of the actual exNriences.
