Come j In a recent issue of n little newspaper which is published in Cuba by the members of the 7th Regiment there appears a poem, "The Soldiers' Prayer," from the pen of Oliver Carter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wllman Carter of Enreka, and in the same issue there is n note regarding an accident to the Eureka boy, who was bitten on the arm by n scorpion. The poem follows: Now I lay me down to sleep, I grant the Lord my gun to keep, And may no other, soldier take My shoes and socks before I wake; 0 Lord please guard me In my slum-ber- a, And keep my cot upon this lumber; Grant that no pegs or guide lines break. let the tent down ere I wake; Lord keep me safely in tby sight. And let no fire drills come tonight, And In the morning let me wake Breathing the scent of n sirloin steak; Relieve me from all work and drills, When I am sick save me from pills. To FREAK LAWS HURT. Freak laws always hurt business, sometimes one mans, sometimes another. - In Washington, s freak law prohibiting trust companies from soliciting trust business either in person or by advertising, hurts trust companies and deprives .newspapers of legitimate business. Since the above item was put into type we learn that County Commissioners Andrus and Francome, County Assessor Charles Haynes, William Hoyt and others appeared before the state board of equalisation on Wednesday and entered a protest against any raise In the valuation of merchandise or farm lands in this county. Mr. Andrus says that quite a delegation of Nephl people accompanied the county officers on the trip to the capital and made a strenuous protest against both increases aa announced by the state board, but that the Tin tic people failed .to take the proper Interest in the fight which is being made in their behalf. The members of the state- - board promised to investigate the matter thoroughly. The farmers claim that the long dry spell has robbed .them of two thirds of their crops and that is a bad time to raise taxes. Many of the merchants also state that they have been assessed in an honest and conservative manner by the. assessor and that to raise the valuation thirty per cent would be little short of last Thursday following an operation for appendicitis. Mr. Seegmlller was a brother of Mrs. Acord and one of the popular young men of southern Utah, Deceased was engaged in the ' 7. Eureka merchants intend to protest against the action of the state board of equalisation in raising the valuation of their merchandise for purpose of taxation. Last week it was announced that the state board had made a blanket raise la merchandise and farm lands of this county and while the local business men are not familiar with the farm land valuations they claim that there is absolutely no reason why the valuations placed upon theta1 stocks by the county assessor should be raised. In most cases these valuations were based on the invoice prices of goods carried in stock and cannot be wrong. To Increase the valuations 30 per cent in each and every case would be to give some of the merchants the worst of it. In order to make their protest effective the merchants of Eureka should get together and appoint a committee to prepare and present a protest to the state board of equali- AGENCY EASTMAN KODAKS.
