Advertising' Superintendent Hi Hiker te Retire and Ba Succeeded by W. E. Costello, January 1. Latter Rectivcd There Is a feeling among local railroad men that the new year will see a genera shaking up of officials on the Oregon Short. lJne. This assertion has ten made in the face of tha many denials that have been given out since (he publication of the fact that Superintendent H. V. HUUkar of the Short Line at Salt Lake would le succeed tsl 1y W. E. Costello uo January 1. It la the general belief that a lot of new blood will be put Into office tn the hope of improving the service. Heretofore the Short Line ban held onto tha men appointed until they were advanced to better positions. Whether they intend to depart from thin principle remains to bo even. H is a certainty, however, that Superintendent Hilllker will retire from the operating department of that line on January 1, and that Mr. Costello, who waa formerly with the Grand Trunk, will succeed to the position. Mr. Costello has tieea In Salt Lake for the past two weeks, acting in the capacity of assistant general superintendent, tl waa believed, bare that thin post I Jon wan created merely to permit Mr. Coatello to acquaint himself with the conditions here in order that ho might bo conversant wfih them when ho succeeded to Mr. Hunker's place. It In now antumneed from Salt Lake that someone will be appointed to fill die position to be vacated by Mr. Costello because of the great amount of work falling upon Mr. Buckingham, the general superintendent. Just who will bo mimed for the place Is not announced. A Salt Lake pnjier announced on Sunday that Mr. Roth, assistant to Mr. Hilllker, with offices In Ogden, would leslgn shortly after the first of tbs new year. This report Is denied, both here and in Salt Lake. It would not he ourpriaing, however. If Mr. Hilllker was taken care of m the Union I'aclAc lines by General Superintendent Park, who It la understood, has tbe highest regard for Mr. Hunker's ability as a railroad man. In that event It wqnld not be surprising to see Ilr. The moot feasible thing that hsn been advanced so far Is the formation or an ''Anti-Eatinleague." Since the meat sellers have raised the price of to more beef a little than the traffie will bear, and the butter trust Is making Its usual fortune, and the milk trust is storming the public money for Its dividends, the people who merely duel re to keep alive by partaking of an occasional meal are being pretty well plueked. Now ermes the announcement tha' after the 1st the restaurants of the first elsss at lenst, (rill boost prices In order to get even on the public for the advance the milk and meat and bread inist Is making on them. Messrs. Diets and Keedy commenced the work of putting In a dry concentrator that there la every reason to believe will mean a grent deal for not only the May Day Mining company and the Tlutic district, but the entire west. It Is a well known fact that with wet concentration it is almost an Impossibility to make any hind of decent saving of silver values, unless the silver cornea along with the lead.
