There haa been timidity in buying and in some instances cancellation uf orders under the spur of threats, but, despite denials from Mime Americana, It is well known by the majority that urh upon the pan of Chinese bu era haa uot been the rule. Thl statement, however, doe not apply to the product of the Standard Oil which haa been oppoaed in many places outside of the principal rltlea in northern China. Ai to that condition, it can only investigation be said that thorough will prove that trade competition ha a much lo do with it aa Chinese antagonism. That underhand method have been employed against the Standard Oil company and the British beAmerican Tobacco company 1 coming plainer every day. At present tli attack on theae two companlea la apparently centered In and around Hankow where obscene circular have also many evidences of appeared and ' unfriendly intent. But at Boo Chow. Chjn Kiting, Chang Chow, Wu Hu, Kiu Klang and many other place tributary to and on the Yangtae. there ha also been more or leaa antagonism of late. The merchants are againat the boycott but under the lash of the guilds they must give a halfhearted acquiescence at least. If the officials ao desire they can squelch the recrudescence of the movement in thla section and by ao doing will gain the support of the merchants. But again there ia the now powerful student class, which, under the teachings of foreign educated Chinese and perhaps others not friendly to American interests where they conflict with their own, has developed an influence recognized by official, guilds, merchants and laborers. From Bourh China, and In fart clear down to the Straits settlements, comet the report that there la no Improvement In the boycott situation; that trade ia badly affected In moat llnea and there 1 little or no buaineaa outside the small union trade. Young, an of the recent riot In Shanghai, arrived here yesterday from the Orient on the steamer Doric. He sentitells of the Intense ment that, exists among the Chinese and predicts that an uprising will take place within the next few months. Young aaya that 200 Chinese were killed in the riot In Shsnghsl and that only the presence of the foreign gunboats at Shanghai prevented the whnleMle slaughter of Americans and Englishmen. Young represents a local Arm, but. because of the boycott, he was iinsble to transact any business with the Chinese merchants. Young ald: "The riot In Shanghai had Its inception because of the action of the British consular rourt. T waa in Shanghai on December lSth, the day of the outbreak. and remained there for the few daya following, during which all foreigners were compelled to carry rifles in order to protect themselves from harm. It seems that a Chinese woman, accused of trafficking in slave girls, waa hauled before the consular court. She waa found guilty and sent, to jail. The Chinese protested and immediately a riot started. The rioters ran from street to street, searching for foreigners. Revolvers and rifles were used by the Americana, and the Chinese answered with volleys of stones. Msny were hurt by the flying missiles, hut I heard Bf no fatalities among tha Americana or English. One English woman waa attacked and dragged b.v the hair. She waa rew-ueby a party of her countryman. I know of an Instanre where a party of foreigners were driven to hay by the mob and were compelled to kill tlx of their BMailant before they pnt them to flight. The Chinese government officials, of course, were powerless to put an end to the uprising, and it waa only the warships that brought tha affair to a speedy termination. That there will he trouble In China la almoat a certainty. All the Chinese want now la a leader. The hatred of foreigners ia there and all the populace want Is some one to stir them to repeat the atrocities of the Boxer uprising. The foreigner who visits Canton at present does so at the risk of hla life. The crowds ga'her about foreigners in the streets of the city and on several occasions I have seen women insulted by the Chinese. The trade conditions in China at present are frightful. The boycott la at' rigid as ever. Not one Chinese merchant would look at my goods. It is absolutely useless to endeavor to sell American manufactured good to In the interior tt la the Chinese. worad than In the larger cities. s GEO. A. SMITH, NOTICE ARE MOBBED. San Francisco, Feb. 15. The officers of the Doric bring the news of the dispatch of two British gunboats to Canton Just before tbelr departure from the Orient. The vessels were the and Sandpiper, gunboats Moorhen which were lying at Sumabul and steamed up to Canton under secret orders, just, before the Doric left Shanghil. it was reported that there had. been an uprising In the Sunning district, near Canton, and that the magistrate and many people had been killed. It was atated that rebels had gathered in force and were marchlni on Sunning city. The inhabitant of the district were fleeing to Macao. In Canton the boycott i most rigid. There, meaeagea from Sau Francisco Chinese merchant, urging a rontiuu- a nee of the boycott, are pred on the wall. In addition to tne agitation In Canton, there ia also an movement. The officer of the Doric learned that in Canton.
