According to a report received at the navy department today the wireless telegraph station at Key West picked up the armored cruiser West Virginia at a distance of 225 miles as that vessel went down the coast ca route to New Or leans, and was In communication with the West Virgiuia at a distance of $75 miles after she had passed. Naval officials are watching with considerable interest the effort of tbe commander of the West Virginia to maintain communication with the mainland by wireless telegraphy, as she bears the President northward. Wireless stations have been Installed at intervals alt along the coast from Capa Cod to New Orleans and plans already hava bean formulated to bring the Isthmus of Panama in direct wireless communication with the United States. After a narrow escape from losing his life in an early morning collision in which the lighthouse tender Magnolia, on which he was t raveling, was so much damaged that he hal to abandon her, President Ruoseveit is now safe on board the armored cruiser West Virginia. Neither the President nor any member of his puny was injured in the accident.
