Ring Seats $230. SEAT SALE SATURDAY BICYCLES The Successful performance or the articulated duplex compound freight locomotive of the Baltimore ft Ohio railroad In helping push heavy freight trains over the rather steep grades on the Alleglutny mountains Is very gratifying to the management of the road, railroad experts generally aud the builders of it. This locomotive is the first of the Mallet typs ever built and there is no other iu the world that near equals it in slxe. It wu built about a year ago and attracted great attention as a part of the Baltimore A Ohio exhibit at the Louisiana Purchase exposition at St. Louis. The delegates to the recent International Railway congress, held at Washington especially those from foreign countries were so much Interested In thla mammoth piece of railroad machinery, and made so many Inquiries about lia character of construction and work in service, that J. E. Muhlfi-ld- , the general sup- ' erintrndent of motive power of the Baltimore A Ohio, prepared a special report on its performance. No locomotive in service on any railroad hue been talked about more than thla one, and it is one of the many attractions all pasaengera are anxious to see in traveling over the section of the road where it hs in operation. After the dose of the St. Louis exposition, thla locomotive, which is No. 2400. waa brought to the Connellarllle d division of the Baltimore ft Ohio and put into regular service between Connellaville, Rockwood and Sand Patch, to assist heavy freight trains over the mountains. This locomotive has made several road trips and been In mountain-helpe- r service during tlw past five months, and in this Time It haa made about 17.000 miles. It waa designed fur the nuroose of balancing the power of the division and to reduce the number of locomotives and crews required to handle heavy freight tonnage over the mountain districts, and thus greatly facilitate the movement of traffic, which has grown to largely during recent years and ia growing very rapidly under the present management of the road. It Is reallv a pair of locomotives with one boiler, which is carried on two sets of driver wheels, each of which is inches in diameter. When in working order the locomotive weighs 334,500 pounds, while, with the tender attsched, (which haa a capacity of fifteen tona of coal and 7.000 gallons of water,) the total weight la 479.500 pounds, or about 193,300 pounds leas than the combined total weight of two of the heaviest consolidation locomotives that are used for other freight service over this tame mountain district While the draw har pull hehind the tender of two of the consolidation locomotive ia about 79,400 pounds, the draw bar pull of the big locomotive la rail-rou- ThatRanEasy RACYCLe!! running uty now to call your We wish attention to Columbia Bicycles They an known aa the "Standard of America," and have boon man Mfactured In thlo country for 21 years. The steaming capacity ot the boiler, woikiim i.f all fractional parts, cylinder, and the other feature that g to make up the requirement for maximum hauling capacity, have been found quite satisfactory. It haa been found that ttie cost per ton mil. in the maintenance of this locomotive will be no greater than that for ordinary consolidation types of helper locomotives, which are of much lighter capacity when operating over a combi ration of level and mountainous divisions, k will consume leas coal than the variona type of simple consolidation locomotives now in the Service, and, when operated on coni'iarailrely level lines, it consumes materially leas coal per ton get much more traffic over the road. Sand Patch la about thirty-thre- e miles west of Cumberland, Md., and from there to Rockwood the grade ranges from 1.3 to nearly 2 per cent. The heaviest curvature on the line over which thla locomotive operates la nine degrees, while on the heaviest grade there la a reverse curvature of about seven degrees. In a number of teat trips that have been made with the Mallet locomotive, one engineer and one fireman have been used to operate it, with ihe result that there were no failures or s on account of the locomotive. In mountain helper service locomotives are frequently required to remain at work fur extraordinary period a between cleaning the fire, and during such intervals, with the forcing of fires to the maximum, doing abort service and pushing trains up the grade, together with drifting down the grade, and long time between trips, there is considerable opportunity for variation of temperature in the fire box and flura, which would tend to cause leakage ana failure. Under such conditions, however. No. 2400 haa been able to meet the requirement, and at the same time, make uae of an orbitumindinary grade of ous coal and maintain ample , boiler pleasure at all times to handle the work. fifty-seve- n Sipry of - TTNE MORNING, 19, -- 1905. 3 vni-!oun- d MOFFAT ROAD.
