This la our wisdom. It were incomparable folly to hide from ourselves the menace to our national horror and power which iw presented by present conditions. But it were inexcusable poltroonery to allow any conditions, however formidable, to dishearten ua. We have much to stimulate our courage and to awaken our zeal. We have three institutions in this country which are conservator of society. They form the solid foundation upon which the superscript ure of a nation must rest. If they he whullv If eliminated society must perish. their efficiency be diminished the security of society must suffer corresponding Impairment. The first of THROW PHYSIC ORGANIZATIONS OF TO THE DOGS? ITT A II, these institutions is Ths Family. "The marriage tie is the foundation of the family, and the bond which holds it. together. The union for life of one man and one woman is the ideal institution an Ideal sustained alike by nature and by morality. The practice of dissolving the marriage bond has nothing in revelation, and but little in reason to commend it. Divorce is subversive of tho family Institution; and It should be abolished save for the greatest violation of tbs marriage compact. Plural marriage, barely tolerated nnder the older dlapenMtion and approved by Christ, baa nothing in reason or nature to commend, but much In both to condemn IL Enlightened Christendom haa put its ban upon IL The family is the nucleus of the atate. Here the first lesions In reverence for age, deference for superiors, and respect for authority are learned. Here also regard for mutual rights ia inculcated. Here that discipline la enforced which hold personal claima in subordination to the general good. That Is to say, the are primary lesson In cftixenshlp taught in the family. A family la Do-a miniature world within doors.' mestic society la the cradle of all the virtues that cement mankind together. In a country that is to be free and great the family must be the school of patriotism. Upon the integrity of the family relationship the welfare of the nation rests aa upon n corner atone. Every means must be used, therefore, to promote the family Institution. Another Institution which haa importance aa closely related to the vital interests of the Republic Is The Public School. Whilst the public school can never be. the substitute for, it must ever be the efflclcnt ally of the family. If It be properly conducted. Upon It the Republic must largely depend for the promotion and diffusion of that Intelligence which will go far toward fib ting the young for the responsibilities of citizenship. The school is not only to promote intelligence but also to etlmulate good morals, supplementing the family training in that important regard. And, in addition to this, if the Republic Is to endure, the public school must be the training ground will In that lofty patriotism which bold in highest honor the Institutions of our country and which will rejoice te make personal sacrifices for tbs common good. Hera the young must be taught that no earthly authority can override tha duty which a man owes to his country; that obedience to the law of the- - land, and respect for Its authority is an obligation. In a land where liberty In religious belief Is profited the public school can never be employed as the Instrument of a religious propaganda it will be an omnlous day for the Republic when the public school, aup ported by public funds, ia allowed to propagate the doctrine of civil subordination to ecclesiastical authority. It will be a fateful day when the public school Inculcates principles that antagonize or even modify, the allegiance which every cttlsen owes to our The public national government. school must ever be administered for the public good, and never for parti ssn or sectarian ends. "I venture to mention one other institution which has a chief importance as being identified with all the vital Interests of this Republic Ths Church, "By this designation Is fliesnt the whole body of believers In our Lord gathered in the Christian denominations. The church must teach and enforce the sanctions of morality and religion. It is the steadfast ally of constituted civil authority. It Is the conservator of domestic purity. It is the loyal supporter of public education. The church stands for Intelligence, for private andi public morals, for the enforcement of law, for equal Jiiatlre to all, for good cltisenahlp. It la always squarely against Intemperance, against mobs, against all lawlessness. It Is the relentless foe of oppression, whether hy corporations. Or hy unions or associations of any kind whatsoever. It Is against lawlessness. whether It be hy a woman In Kansas wielding a hatchet professedly in the interest of morals, by a mob In Chicago In defiance of good order, nr by the dissolute In Qgden In resistance to the constituted authority. The Republic owes more to the church than to sny oth.-- Institution on earth. It stands for ihe weak as against the strong: for th help of the helpless; Ir Is against for pure benevolence. vice and all things that dtsgrade. It stands for loyalty to the government. It decorates the altars of God with the flag of our country. .The Republic 1 tinder the strongest obligation to promote the aints of the church In all legitimate waj. Tho church believes that every man has a right to one day out (if seven for rest and recuperation. It so leaches. It believes that every one need one day out of seven for culture. It so moral and that the hodles learhe. D their minds of men atv dwarfed, and their morals corrupted by unceasing roil. I so teaches. But what ir the state nullifies the gracious nnd helpful work of the church, and thus tend to break down the Influence s of one nf the upon which It Is chlrflv Let It be at once understood that the church In this country does not seek for formal union with the state. Surh a union would be lit j. helpful to the one and disastrous to :he influence of the other. It distinctly disapproves of any ecclesiastical in'orference, either openly or secretly, with the conduct of political affairs. 1 holds that nothing but calamity can he expected as the final out com. of ecclesiastical domination of public affair. It contends for individual liber y of thought, and unconstrained Hbo-- j- of action, in all matter of public Interest. It holds that the Influence nf the church upon public affair mun? he moral, exertel through ! teaching and through the lives and example of those trained at It altars, anl r,. ver exerted a an organization. Another Warfare. Veterans, who followed 'Old Glory' in days of unhappy strife, we hail you with sentiments of undying love and veneration! You have made sacrifices, undergone hardships, overcome difficulties. and have stood upon fields where death held high carnival. Your fellow citizens will never forget you. You have an enduring place in the history of the Republic. Generations unborn will honor your courage and devotion. The end of the strife came. Laying down the weapons of warfare, and with an honorable discharge in hand, you returned horns to resume (he occupations of peace. But now, in these closing moments, I must direct your attention, my comrades, to that war in which there is no discharge. The banner of the cross waves high above all the flags of nations. Some of yon, when you followed the Stars and Strlpea, followed the cross also. You were true to the me as to the other.
