This company of children, bright and Intelligent, are interesting from a great many standpoint. Many people imagine that thirty children, travelling together thousands of mllqs away from their parents, and coming into contact with auch a medley of character a they do. might become rude and rough in their actions. but luch it not the case. There are twenty giri. in ihe company who are looked after by four Indie. who travel with the company, fixe glrla to each lady. Mr. Cheater, Miaa Trott, Miea Alice Pollard and Mra. Ford exercise a watchful care over the young girls and are both guardians and frleuda to them. The last named ia the achool teacher of the party lady and each day instructs the youthful minds in ail the siudlea of the common school curriculum, except geography, and they learn tint with their feet," an Mr. Pollard expressed it. Shortly after their arrival In Qgden the children breakfasted and then enjoyed a rest of an hour and a half. Almost every day a rehearsal of one of the different productions they play la held. There are a numlier of reasons given hy the management why reheara-al- a are held no often. Aa the children grow older there must be a weeding out procei and the younger children are retained, the older ones allowed to go. The younger children are understudies to the older children and are continually studying the different parts, knowing that some day they will take the older children's places. There la no petty jealousy among tha children such a a 1 common with their elders, for the reason that no favoritism la shown. During rehearsal time yesterday the children on the stage were bright looking, but itlll did not have that precocious appearance that one would almost expect to see. They were Just a healthy looking lot of English youngsters, cud In their regulation The girls wore traveling costumea. stocking caps and blue aerge dresses, all alike. The stage manager and director of the company. Alf Gouldlng, is but 21 years of age and has been with the company for sixteen years, not, however, In the capacity of atage manager, aa he started in at 5 years of age and has played almost all the different roles that he Is now Instructing the little players in. He is an exceptionally bright young man and knows the operas presented hy the company from Z to A, backwards. He is supplied with an almost unlimited amount of patience and knows that it ia constant repetition that impresses the part on the child's mind. That the children are very much attached to each other is evident after their actions toward one having seen another. - One little incident that struck the reporter forcibly happened during rehearsal time. The two Pollard twins, boy not yet 6 years of age, were seated on a large trunk hack of the main portion of the company who were engaged in their rehearsal. They had their arm twined around each other's neck and were hilling and cooing like turtle doves. Mr, C. A. Pollard, manager and proprietor of the company, Is traveling with the show.
