Show THE MORNING -- a- EXAMINER. DGTEN, UTAH, in C USD AY MORNING, accumulated ia the pipe line operating (he turbines of the West India Electric company, owning tba steamer lines. One hundred nnd twenty men were employed la the removal of thia accumulation. They were divided into two gangs.. The gang at work in the lower section of the pipe finding that the water waa rising became and a mad scene ensued, followed by n rush to the nearest manhole. The engineer In charge shouted to the men to follow Tiim towards the turbines at the power house, but only eight heeded him. These nun were saved. The remainder of the gang fought like wild beasts at the manhole they found. They tore and bit each other in frenzied efforts to get out of the trap. Four escaped by swimming up the pipe line to a higher manhole. The rest of the gang, thirty-three In number, perished in the rising watert But for the panic all of them would hare escaped. The theory advanced la that at a foint above the fatal manhole a sand bank existed, behind which water accumulated from percolation through the sluice gates. The continuous rivulets caused the sand hank to give way, flooding the lower end of the pipe and cauaing the disaster. The general manager of the company waa arrested last night on the charge of manslaughter, but he waa admitted to ball. RUSSAIN IRONCLAD RAMS RUB- MAN BATTWHP. St. Petersburg, June 288:18 p.
