Hallin a account ut the gang in the west Is as follows: Monroe, Hickey and Baines, who were .convicted of the Zang saloon hold-ubelonged to a gang of professional thieves and phoney jewelry peddlers and plungers, who call themselves movers, that operate principally through California, Kansas, Washington,- Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Colorado and .Wyoming. They have friends i most all cities of any size, who are in some business, generally the saloon business, where tney hang out when they are in town. Utah is a hang-ou- t for most of them hi the summer time, except those" that are "slowed or are doing time. .v 'They flock in about May and take different routes to go out and make a plunge or to get money. The plungers or beggars take la tbe email inland towns and duget up' or beg with a small card with a verse written upon it aad have themselves bunged up by putting lye and acid upon themselves am the arms and legs to make the people believe that they have been scalded. Sometimes there ere people on the road that dont belong to the gang and if a mover should meet aouto one he didnt know he would say to them that he' was one of the Johnson family, and would ask him who be would know and give the monograms of the ones ha knew. Here they would rush the can and shoot the .white line bottle every day and night all winter. Once the dicks (police), got next and they quit for a while until things got easy. In Fools place on Sacramento street in Frisco there used to be a great bang-ou- t for the push, and one time I remember being la his place one day when a guy came in and would not treat and the gang pushed him into a corner and robbed him of every cent he had and kicked him out Into the street. Evans-o- n Combination of .Orgon Short Line and Union Pacific Offices. Tbe recent trip of General Manager Bancroft of the Union Pacific through Ogden has resulted in his urst move towards economy according to his idea. Late Saturday afternuou a disorderpatch came to Ogden ing that on Monday morning the two nlfices'of the Union Pacific and the Oregon Short Line must be combined and that the work of transferring the wires be done yesterday. The wires from room 5 la the Union depot were; therefore; cut out and out In again la the Union Pacific dispatcher! room ia room one and the wires are being put Into condition today to be used. While tbe Oregon Short Line operators had priority rights with their own company they begin anew with the Union Pacific. The result of the combination of offices will be to let out throe men in Ogden and that was probably Bancroft's idea from the start. The arrangement ia that King and Walker of the Oregon Short Line office will go to the Union Pacific; taking the places made by the letting oet of Clems and Steele at the Union Pacific office. These two aad Wright ot the Oregon Short Line offlee are dee to leave Ogden under Mr. Bancrofts arrangement. Wright went to Salt Lake yesterday to find out Just where he stood. As the arrangement now stands the same force that did the work ia Ogden for the Union Pacific will have to do the work for both the roads aad the positions will be anything bat a nap. . It bas been published broadcast that the Oregon Short Line was to take over certain divisions of the Union Pacific, but it aeems exactly the other way, for all employes ia the combined offices at connecting points are aslmd to give Union Pacific sorely bonds. 113, 2bth A large number of men are being sent to Banvard to be used in the servicing of the new yards at that place.
