LEWIS & COMPAtJ JEWELERS the pockets of the Independent Telephone company before the subscriber has derived one cent benefit therefrom. For this extraordinary exaction and tyranny the mayor and city council are manifestly responslbla and the blame should rest with them where It belongs more than vrltli the Independent company, who, like all other like concerns, is prone to take advantage when nobody la looking. Tho mayor and city council, though they may never have thought of It, were elected for the purpose of preventing the very thing that has now happened, the nuisance and confusion of Jangling telephones and the added expense. This, It seems to a man looking on, the mayor and city council can do, they can make the telephone companies pay a reasonable interest on all moneys that they collect In advance of service rendered, and apply the Interest no gathered on the warranto that are drifting along toward some friendly harbor. Every one who has given the subject a moments thought knows that both the Bell end Independent have exploited Balt Lake and Ogden, or rather robbed them, to get money with which to run their wires over the mountains, and deserts, hundreds of miles at a stretch without a human habitation, to reach a settlement or mining camp where they saw prospect of doing some business, or to get through Into another center of population. Of course such enterprise Is greatly to be commended, but It would look a whole lot better If these concerns would use their own money to carry on their own personal undertakings. I do not think that Mr, . Picketts should ask or expect that other people who have no concern In bla quarrel should butt in, and enter a dispute of which they know nothing. It is easier to get rid of the Independent than It is of tho Bell, and one or other should quit the Add, and that la all there Is to the "war on the Independent Telephone company. TO KILL HIMSELF John Wise, the follow arrested for drunkenness and taken to the city Jail last night from In front of the Reed hotel made an unsuccessful attempt at suicide last night, by hanging himself up by his necktie to a beam In the corridors. He was persistent In his determination to make an end of himself. After he was discovered and released by the other prisoners and received medical attention several pieces of glass were found In bla tightly closed hand. City Physician W. J. Browning gave him opiates and by the time he awoke this morning hia determination to kill himself was wone. It is believed that Wiae is totally insane and that he could not have been In his right mind last evening. He was found in front of the Reed hotel In very scanty attire, raising a rumpus. After being taken to the station he acted strange and created uneasiness among the prisoners. Selecting a solitary corner he strong himself to the beam with a stout necktie snd had almost strangled to death when the prisoners, whose, attention had been attracted by bla anguished yells, found him. After releasing him the Jailors and prisoners did everything ! Memorial services will be held at K. P hall on Sunday, June -- 14. All members art requested to be present & L-- HOWE, Secretary. C. D. The Physicians are not making war on the telephone company; they feel and know that two telephones In a place of buslnes, two more at their homes, is an intolerable nuisance, to say nothing of a greatly added and unnecessary expense. No one has found any fault with the people of the Independent telephone company, but the Independent Telephone company having but few subscribers, It la thought that this company could be dispensed with more readily than could the Bell with ita large list of subscribers both In the city and In tha country as well. One telephone company can do the business of a whole city as satisfactorily to the people as can a down, and if it fails to do so, either on account of indifference or Incompetency, thbn the city council should compel an adequate service. If the city council Js helpless In this contingency then ft should wake up and take' charge of the business because they are elected for that very purpose, and for no other JOHN WISE TRIES Clean, Comfortable; Not Hot and Stuffy.
