The menagerie tent caught fire from the flying spark and four of tho elephants broxa loose from their chains and stampeded wildly through the streets of the town. Before they were caught one woman, Miss Gibbs, a deaconess of the Methodist church, was knocked down and In jured by one of the elephants and died later; a man waa badly crushed by another of tho big animals; a barber shop almost demolished and the entire front of a music store caved In. When the animals caught eight of the flames they became panic stricken and the four elephants succeeded In tearing out the stakes to which they were chained and daalwd madly through the big crowd, which a moment before was entering the show. By this time a hundred men armed with rifles and revolvers were coming down the street. A fusllade waa opened on the half dazed animals and one of them was literally riddled with bullets Seemingly not affected by the shower of lead the enraged elephant turned suddenly axul plunged against a window of a music store, demolishing the front. He 'was finally driven Into a corral, where ha now stands bleeding from hundreds of bullet holes but as yet too wild o admit of anyone getting near him.
