Graves, the two men arrested hero on Tuesday night for passing worthless checks, are well known In Balt Lake and are want-a- d there. Bayllaa appeared In Salt Lake about (we months ago with hla wife, and obat tained a room at a boarding-hous- e where he 331 South Second East stayed as lung as the proprietor would allow him to do so without paying bis board, after which he was requested Is take himself elsewhere. In the meantime he had secured 835 from one of the. boarders who had cashed a checked for him, and which the bank refused to honor. He remained at the boarding-hous- e about six weeks, and left his trunk as security for his unpaid board blit, but on examination the trunk was found to contain only a few worthless rags. Bayllaa claimed to be In the employ of the West Coast Lift Insurance company as a solicitor, and told people with whom ha was associated that he was to receive a large amount of money in return for hla work, and hence was able to secure credit from various sources. Among his attempts to secure money on checks were the following: Check for 88 st Sols bar, S14 South State street, which he attempted to pass last Friday. He succeeded In passing a worthless check for 94 at ths Metropolitan bar about six weeks ago. He also accepted from Graves a check which he passed at the bar In the Federation building. This last check was paid by Sharp Walker, who went security for Bayliss, to whom he posed as a friend. When arrested here Bagllss said that he had a wife in Salt Lake living at the Wilson. Investigation showed that there was a woman at the Wilson who claimed to be the wife of Bayliss, and that she paid her board bill there regularly. She la the same woman who lived with Bayliss at the boardinghouse which they left without paying (heir board blHa.
