Two special trains, t arrying trooper of the Sixth United States cavalry, passed through Ogden last night bound where the regimen', for San Fraiu-ist-u- , will take the transport inoinua Satur- day lust fur the Philliplne. The men are a fine appearing lot of troojKTs. most of them being in the early twenties. They are from various Hsls In Wyoming, Nebraska, the Du- kotas and Montana. The first train under the command of the regimental officer, Colonel Rogers, arrived tu the city about 7 o'clock and the second train under the command of Lieu ten- Ray arrived about 9:30 o'clock. Many of th- - troopers availed themrs of an hour selves of the In this city to take a walk up to Washington avenue and view the business district of the city. The troopers started tow'ard the depot at n rapid iace, but before the las notes of the call had died away the metallic music nf a phonograph finishing a patrlullc selection was heard. The hoya had been fooled by a phonotheagraph In a neighboring flve-ceter, which had played a patriotic containing a bugle call. There are no horses with the regiment. When the Rlxth arrives In the Islands the horses left by the Fourth cavalry will be used by them. Ahead of the Capacity of tha Roads. The freight traffic is tremendous, and It keeps us using every endeavor and employing every agency In our power to keep In night, said assistant general freight agent 8. V. Derrah, of the Rio Grande to the Tribune in Salt Lake yesterday. The business demands of the country, continued Mr. Derrah, "are far and away ahead of the railroads to handle. They haven't the necessary equipment and power. Thla, not because we are not doing all in our power to Increase our facilities ao as to enable ua to handle the business. We are Increasing our equipment Just aa fast as cars and motive power can be made. The local demand la tremendously heavy, especially on our Bingham branches, and we are doing all we possibly can to Improve the service. Why It la that you don't supply Balt Lake with more coal than you do? You have great coal mines on the line of your road, only a few hours' run from the city? The coal mlnea are all right, are they not? Yea, the mlnea are all right, but we have great difficulty In getting miners. They prefer to work In mineral-producin- g mlnea. because In them they claim to get better wages. Then you must know that we have a wide field to supply. The demand for coal at Bingham and Garfield la very heavy. They must have coal to seep the machinery going. We have to furnish the Kan Pedro and the Xevaua Northern, besides other Nevaua points. Thla city Itself requires far more coal than formerly. The city Is rapidly growing, and the demand for coal, as for everything else, is constantly on the increase. We are handling a great deal more coal this year than we could last. Take, for Instance, July. In July 1907, we transported 1S.875 tons more of coal than In the same month last year. Our facilities for transportation are greatly Increased, but ao Is the demand. I think, however, with continued improved service, that we will eventually be In better shape to meet local demands than we are now or iuve been for aoine time past" In a raid on the opium Johan hi Chinatown last night Deuwtirt Hutchlna and Patrolman Ed Uorrtii-ee- y arrested Alfred Taylor and ,T.
