Indian Joe, who was the first to see the robbers, commanded them to surrender. and the reply he got waa a bul- let sent through the blrm of hla hat. He then oitened fire, and at the third shot one of the robbers was hit In the breast, the bullet piercing tha heart, and the other holdup, seeing that be was up against two men. made again ftir the hills, and It Is believed hla ammunition waa exhausted. Near the body lay two sacks of stiver, containing 1450 and a small wallet filled with gold end currency amounting to 1175. On the body waa found a ervol-vwhich belonged to Fred Chester.
