OFFICIAL PAPER OF THE COUNTY JOHN A. CREIGHTON. When Hon. John A. Creighton of Omaha died, a Jolly, knightly old gentleman fell away. Ilia biography, as published In the telegraph columns of the State Journal yesterday, waa but a brief aynopala of the tnan'a career, which waa nothing if not an existence of good deeds. He all hia life, and waa a money-makthe art of acquiring seemed natural to too, him, but he was a money-spende- r, and the manner in which he spent It reflected credit upon tint mind that obeyed the promptings of the heart which dictated its actions. It is nut so much as to dwell upon his good deeds that this is written, because anything that might be said here would be surplusage. Abler pens have told the people who did not know him what he was, and those who were acquainted with him need no refreshing of memory. The writer of these lines well remembers when Mr. Creighton was created a count at the papal court by Leo XIII, In recognition of hie services In behalf of the Homan Catholic religion. w At that time John A. McShane, of Mr. Creighton, the representative of the Omaha district in congress, owned the Omaha Herald. Mr. McShane was especially gratified with the distinction conferred upon hie father-in-laand telephoned the editor of the Herald to give the old gentleman a nice little send-of- f. The editor aforesaid was one of those fellows that Julius , Caesar wanted about him; he was fat and slept o' nights. He was genial to a degree and able beyond measure, but he wrote a hand that resembled the tracks of a field mouse In the sand, minus their er eon-ln-la- w, CAN JUSTIFY HIM7 As a preface to Its story of the testimony of Evelyn Thaw in last evenings Issue, the State Journal used the following language: With a deliberate disregard for her own future, and what the cold and unfeeling world may say of her, Evelyn Nesbitt Thaw took the witness stand this morning and told the alory of her ruin by Stanford White, conThe atory itself la cealing nothing. not exactly nice, but behind It all there stands the Angel of Love with hia torch Illuminating the action of the woman who, to save her husbands life, has ruined her own 1A the eyee of many, yet who has exalted herself in the vision of the few, by a deed as heroic as ever woman performed. It has been written: Greater love hath no man than thla, that he lay down his life for hie friend.' What shall be said of this brave little woman, who, in the chilly atmosphere of the Twentieth Century, proclaims to tlie entire world her shame and disgrace, the loss of the Jewel of her womanhood, that the man she loves may have a chance for his life. Let those who say she Is lying hesitate a moment while they recall that In such a case It is as equally brave to lie as to tell the truth, for in either event the verdict of the caustic and the cynical will be the same. Her testimony shows her to bo one of the beat girls who ever promised to love, honor, cherish and obey a man who ever took a marriage vow, and If Harry Thaw la acquitted and falla In the future to pay her the honor and the Ituniage due her, no matter what people may say; if he falls to stand by her aide through the coming years, unmindful of men, the onlfflee of women, then he should be boiled lu oil, for no fate le too cruel for him V to merit. Editor Journal. That statement waa written in the haste of going to press and without the candid, deliberate Judgment that cornea from thinking a matter over. Now It la barely possible that it la a little early to indulge In any extended comments upon thla little woman's action, but at the same time we think It very highly Improbable and believe In all sincerity that the time le ripe, right now, to say that In the death of Stanford White the world waa well rid of a roue whose chief delight was the deflowering of female children. Here was an aged Individual who by virtue of the yean which rested upon hia ahnulden should have cared for thla hitherto, innocent girl. He made her believe he was her protector and that he had her welfare at heart. Under pretext of doing good he enticed her to hia room, drugged her and ravished her In a manner which had none the less brutality about It than attaches to the brute who seises hia victim, sniutlien her cries by main strength and accomplishes by cruel force his devilish purpose. Why, this man must have been like Arbaces, who trained girls under hia own hand, watched them blossom Into rare flowen and then, when their beauty was most radiant, plucked them to gratify hia rampant and remorseless regularity. Carl Smith, the young man who succeeded to sEugene Field's column on the Chicago News, and who was some years afterward drowned In the rapids of the St. Lawrence, was Just beginning hie newspaper career, and w as the alleged proofreader. Poor Carl! He could write great dope, but he never waa a good proofreader, but let that lust pass. The editor aforesaid wrote a nice little editorial mention reciting the appointment; why It waa made, paid the old man a handsome tribute, and wound up by announcing that tikis distinction conferred upon Mr. Creighton by His Holiness will be received with feelings of satisfaction by all the old timers In this vicinity. It was in the days of hand composition and tramp printers, and 4he urtist who got the take was a new one and did not savvy the editor's handwriting. When he got to he was stuck. He could not make out what it was. so he set It up old terriers,' and let it go at that. Smith pawed It, and the next day the Herald announced to a breathless and gasping public that this distinction conferred upon Mr. Creighton by His Holiness will be received with feelings of satisfaction by all the old terriers old-time- in this vicinity.'' Talk of the bravery of the one who walks up to the mouth of the cannon, or who storms over the abatis, colara In hand, to die amid the shouts of victory that fall on hia dulling ears as he hears the bugle sound its paean of triumph!
