How beautiful are the divaips and Rants Claus Illusions of childhood. with his silvery beird. rosy choeks and Jovial manner Is s grand reality during those days and the merry twinkle of bells In early morning brings to the children visions minds of bright-eye- d sleigh pulled by of a fleet-foot- toy-lad- ed reindeer. The Illusion Is perfect and they are happy. Only those who have had their dreama and air castles sliattered know what a rude awakening comes to the youngsters when they find that Kris Krlngle la a creation of fancy and dwells In the realms of imagination. Children, however. are not the only ones who are the happy victims of Illusion. Tbs Illusions of childhood often extend Into the period of youth. Into mature mid die age and sometimes Into the winter of life. "The Illusion of Beatrice,1 a three-a- ct comedy by Martha Morton, wherein the Illusion of youth has been made the pivotal point upon which balances the moat amusing natural situations and some of the most situations, was presented at the Grand last night. The only difference between the illusion of Beatrice and that of the child of half the yearn Is that cruel awakening comes sooner in one case than in the other. Maude Fealy, thf youngest dramatic star on the American stage, appeared in the title role, and capturer the audience by her charming personality and her winsome girlish actions. Found cuddled up in wraps in the room of John Watson, an American student In Paris, one night a little foundling Is brought up under the impression that she la the daughter of an Austrian princess who ran away with a Hungarian musician. Watson names the child Beatrice Victoria Novena, and gives her a good education, making her believe that tbe money he Is spending on her la being held by him In trust. The Imperious haughty manner of Beatrice at times is the cause of considerable amusement while again the tear glands would fain overflow at the sight of the young girl who cries out for her unknown parents and later realiese with a shock that the dream Is over, the illusion dispelled. The company supporting Miss Fealy Is exceptionally well balanced and comprised of actors of ability. Even the elevator boy Is decidedly clever, and makes a hit by his slangy American expressions. The stags settings were superb realistic creations of the stage builders art and the essential details were noticeable throughout Blanche Douglas is nn actress of unquestioned ability and In the part of Mrs. Jahn Stewart made a tremendous hit with the audience. In a little bit of hysterical acting, which was neither a laugh nor a cry, she showed comedy heart-stirri- ng that ahe was a finished artist at the acting game. Jack Webster as Arthur Jerome Wilson, proved hlmallf a leading man removed from the matinee type. He Is handsome and manly, reads his lines well. acts perfectly natural and doea not overdraw the part. Harrington Reynolds and David R. Toung, two veteran actors of recognised standing, gac excellent char actsrisatlons of the parts of John Stewar and Jim Howard, respectively. Maurice Costello sa Harry Cad walla d er, gave a perfect simulation of a nice little smart set lag. Hla work was Cora Christiansen, as Miss good. Merry weather, one of the faculty of a girls school, got all there was out of a small part. Joseph Coughlin, as Tim, the elevator boy. made a hit with . the audience. "THE STROLLERS. "The Strollers, a musical comedy In three acts, was presented for the second time this season at the Grand last night. Considering that the house had not been dark a night for a week d past the production drew a audience, which was kept In an uproar by the funnyisms of Teddy Webb and George Kunkel. The loud, merry laugh of a lady in the audience was Infectious and made such an Impression upon the member sof the company that Teddy Webb offered her a position to go with them as official laugh producer. The same musical tomedy was given here earlier in the season by practically the same com pany, but Its presentation this time was under more favorable 'ititlon. as the costumes and stage settings were better. Teddy Webb, as August Lump, a stroller, proved himself equal to the reputation previously earned. He Is a clever comedian, and In Alda Hemml, another stroller, In the role of bertha, had a good running mate. I interrupted, taking exception to the evidence. Your honor, I asked, how did the boy know what the man went out of the shop for? "How did you know? the Judge asked the witness Immediately, that the man went out to be ahaved? "Why, the boy replied, of course, I dont know anything about the law, and perhaps I did not know that he went out to be shaved, but when a man goes out of the shop with his face covered with a smutty growth and returns again shortly with a smooth face, I always thought I was Justified in presuming that he had gone out for the purpose of being shared.
