Tho expense and trouble attendant upon two sets of primaries and two conventions will thus be avoided. Candidates for these places are not very numerous as yet, although there is plenty of time. Hon. Morris Sommer is an avowed candidate for one of the places and A. S. Fowler for the other. So far as the candidates for the judicial positions on tho district bench are concerned, Hon. S. W. Stewart and Hon. W. C. Hall will doubtless be chosen by acclamation. v There Is a great deal of talk about nominating Hon. C. S. Varian for the supreme bench by the Democratic stale convention, contingent of course upon his accepting the place. Mr. Varian is a very able lawyer and would make a strong candidate because he would prove acceptable to the bar association. Judge Rolapp, of Weber county, is also mentioned for the place, while Judge Baskin has numerous admirers who would like to see him renominated. J Thoresen, J Gubernatorial candidates are being discussed by mebers of both parties, The Republicans are talking of Governor Wells, E. H. Callister and J. T. Hammond. The talk is of rather a vague nature, as it is not yet known whether any of them will be candidates. Some of them deny that they are or will be candidates; others are In favor, of Governor Wells his nine years record in the office is pointed to with pride, and Justly so, for few governors of any state have made records as good as his. He has acted with great wisdom and firmness in many trying and delicate positions, and we cannot recall one serious mistake he has made in his nine years of office, and very few trivial ones. Against him the third term argument is brought up. Others of the Republicans object to him because they think he is a Kearns man. At one time he was close to Kearns, but for a couple of years the' senator and the governor have been drawing apart, and for a long time there has been little in common between them. The governors latest act which conclusively shows that was his appointment of Arthur Pratt as warden of the state prison. If the governor should be a candidate, Mr. Hammond will not, but would probably come out for as secretary of state, in which office he has been a marked success in every respect. As to Mr. Callister, he is not by any means pushing himself, but he has a host of friends who seem determined that he shall be governor, and if he decides to enter the race he will be a formidable candidate. non-committ- re-electi- on J J The Democrats are talking R. Its about the same way with Sam King for district attorney, the Provo people say, and they ought to know. Sam would not be averse to the purely honorary position of delegate to the Democratic national In the fourth judicial convention.
