Show T RUfM 2 ter row in the early summer convention of the Republican party. Perhaps the Democrats will not have all the fun after all. There may he others. Jl Jl Has Hanna effected a combination with Rockefeller? Recent events east seem to indicate it. The Boston News Bureau, a business journal, publishes the following: Whether the relations between J. P. Morgan & Co. and the Standard Oil people be cordial or not, it may be stated that two forces have combined in an attempt to defeat Mr. Roosevelt for the presidency. Mr. M. A. Hanna, who has been in New York for some days, has had several conferences with Mr. Morgan and the Rockefellers. One of the most prominent of the Standard Oil crowd said last week: What the country needs at its head is a practical business man. It may be well for Mr. Roosevelt to remember that he has never been elected to the presidency. He is now president only .through the death of Mr. McKinley. The business of the president is, of course, to see that the laws of the country are enforced, but he should do something besides unsettle the confidence of business men. Not a cent of Standard Oil money will be put into any new enterprise until we know where we stand. o The banquet given at the Alta club on Wednesday evening by President Harriman of the Southern Pacific system to the visiting railroad men who came to attend the function of the completion of the great Lucin cut-of- f was a most enjoyable, although informal affair.. There was a large attendance of local railroad men and a number of citizens in other lines of business were also fortunate enough to be present. The menu and the wines were excellent, and a very interesting evening was passed. There was no speechmaking, rather a good luing, by the way, the only thing in that line being a few words of welcome by Mr. Harriman to his guests. o Elephants Keen Sense of Smell. No one can deny that Bryan is a great American. Laying all questions of politics aside, he is great As is well known he is abroad, in England. That American hating paper, the Mail, had the bad manners to send a reporter to him to ask him what his opinion was of the statement that American women are universally vulgar at public functions. Bryan gave the reporter an answer that was short and sweet and right to the point He said: You have to be three thousands miles away before you can have such . ideas of American women. He said nothing about the impudence of a publisher who would send a reporter on such an errand, but let it go as stated. The answer was all that could be desired. It is to be hoped that the English editor has got the idea soaked up into his intellect by this time so fully as to appreciate it . o Boston Lights.
