Show INDEPENDENT TELEPHONES. In every city Id the country where independent telephone companies have gained a foothold they have had to fight and fight hard for the privilege of giving the people better service at half the cost exacted by the Bell Telephone company. In the state of Iowa, where referendum prevails, there are 400 independent telephone companies operatic in as many towns. This is a much larger proportion according to population than obtains in any other state. The explanation is that the people know the benefits of independent systems and obtain them when not hampered by city councils which are controlled by monopolists. Kansas City is an example of the struggle the people had with their rulers to obtain an independent telephone system. After many defeats by city councils and mayors they finally obtained relief. The following is a part of the language used by Mayor Reed of Kansas City, who favored independent telephones and under whose administration the boon was finally granted: The present condition (before the independent franchise was granted) of the telephone service here is lamentable. Relief must come either through government ownership of a good system or through an able, efficient, honest and honorably managed corporation Either of these methods bars The Bell comout the Bell. an honest act in pany, which never did its life, takes out of Kansas City, at a low estimate, $300,000 annually, and yet in its last sworn statement to the assessor gives the entire value of its property in Jackson county at $22,000. I will not extend to you the freedom of the city, for I know that, should you have occasion to use a Bell telephone, you will violate at least one of the commandments and probably the laws of the state. The independent telephone company of Boise, Idaho, began existence two years ago. When it started it had 37 subscribers. The Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone company had 110. The latter- was charging $4 per month for residence phones and $7 for business The independent company immediately cut this rate in twain. As a result of the competition which exists there, the Bell telephone company houses. now has, according to its own claims, only 500 instruments in use in the city, (really it is less) while the independent concern has 1,100. The instruments used by the new company are better and give greater satisfaction to patrons. They are of later model, with every improvement which has been added by inventors, not in the employ of the Bell concern. Subscribers say there is no comparison between the two, so superior is the service given by the new concern. The management of the independent company finds the old outfit a hard one to down, however, owing to the methods it employs. Decoy letters are continually being sent to it by friends of the old outfit, these letters being written with a view to getting information concerning the workings. But they fail, as the independent company is not answering communications, save where they know who is writing for information. All of which reminds us of a sample letter received from another independent company, by a member of the corporation asking for a franchise here. It closes with this statement: You will find all kinds of people coming to you if you are interested in independent telephone movements. A few of them will be decoys of the Bell Telephone company and its allies. Don't talk unless you are dead sure who you are talking to. By the way, Councilman of the Reciprocity Mining Co.,Vigus, has gone east for jour weeks on business connected with the corporation.
