The officers of the company are: James P. and others interested in in the oil industry of the State are working on a scheme to hold a convention of oil men in Salt Lake. The proposition is yet in embryo, but those who have it in hand are quite enthusiastic, and it is hoped to hold the convention In February or March, It is thought that an irr.erchange of ideas as to the manner of boring oil wells and of matters pertaining to the industry generally would prove of great benefit to those interested, and at the same time would aid the industry by directing public attention to what was being done. The idea should George Westervelt ent vice-preside- j be encouraged. An oil exchange for Salt Lake is now assured. At the meeting held Tuesday evening the articles of incorporation as drawn up by the committee were approved. The name agreed upon is the Oil Product and Inter-Mounta- in Stock exchange. The capital stock was placed at $10,000, in 100 shares of the par value of $100 a share. Ownership of one share entitles to a seat on the exchange. The officers are: Perry S. Heath, president; W. I. Roberts, S.L. Boggs and H. P. The of the retiring members of the Board of Education for another year is taken as the establishment of a rule that the terms of the officers shall be of the same duration as the terms for which they were elected to membership in the board. Such will probably prevent complications and simplify the routine. re-electi- on Considerable divergence of opinion as to the legality of the act of the Legislature exists among lawyers, but the decision of the Supreme court puts the matter at rest. Internal Revenue Colector Callister reports the revenues colected by his office for the last half year as $529,000, against $431,000 for the corresponding period a year ago. This increase, nearly $100,000, in the face of a large reduction in the articles taxed, is a great showing for the. States of Utah, Idaho and Montana. It shows that trade must have been exceptionally good in those States. In nearly every other section of the country the revenue has decreased owftig to the abolition of the tax on various articles. The feeling in Utah against the leasing of mineral land on the Uintah reservation is very Intense. The opposition is more apparent in the country districts than in Salt Lake, and the action of the State officials in trying to prevent it meets with hearty approval. The coup of Senator Kearns in introducing in the Senate a resolution for an investigation and directing the Sec- retary of the Interior to furnish the Senate with all documents in relation to the subject was highly commended in the city by both Democrats and Republicans It is expected the reso- lution will have the effect of preventing the ratification of the proposed lease or at least delaying action upon it until Senator Kearnss bill for the opening of the Uintah reservation is introduced.
