The action of the piece takes place in San Francisco, and shows how the drug, opium, is smuggled into the city. The second act shows the Chinese quarter in San Francisco, together with its curious underground life the home of the highbinders and opium fiends. The entire play is a revelation of the secret hidden life of the Chinamen underground, surrounded, as he is, with squalor on the one hand and Oriental splendor on the other. The best piece of acting, however, was that of Antonio, the Mexican cattle rustler, in the hands of Mr. Jaxone. It was really one of the best bits of character work ever seen on the stage of the Grand. In artistic painting of treacherous fawning and secret deviltry, Mr. Manley made an acceptable weary Willie and scored a hit In the sOng, Im Tired. The remainder of the supporting company was, with one or two exceptions, below the average. In scenery and stage settings that was a careful regard for realism which excited much favorable comment. xnlce-rldd- rag-tim- The many admirers of the Salt Lake Opera company will be pleased to know that, through the energetic efforts of Mr. Pyper, the popular organization will again present "The Wedding Day next week. The German as a high roller in comedy has come to stay. Weber and Fields made the idea popular in New York, while Mason and Mason, in their new absurdity to be seen at the Grand, have carried Teutonic comedy through the country outside the metropolis. Surrounding Mason and Mason are a number of clever people, among whom may be mentioned Lottie Salter, Beatrice Haskell, the Lawrence Sisters, Lew Newcomb and others. MULVEY, The experience Is that in cities where independent telephone exchanges have been put in operation the result has been a benefit to the public ih the way of better service and lower rates. The telephone exchange in this city is getting to be on a par with the street car monopoly, and the sooner it is checked the better. The Independent company should be given a franchise because it would furnish a modem and in every way more satisfactory service at half the rates charged by the present company. The new company proposes to reach every point in and out of the city reached by the Bell company, and as its rates are so much less it will have many more subscribers. Small store keepers and tradesmen and many families cannot afford to pay the prices now exacted and to them a cheaper service would be a boon. The people of the city would be benefited by the introduction of a competing system and the city as a corporate, body would also be benefited. The of the new company would inplant crease the taxable property of the municipality and the system would- give employment to a large number of people. There does not seem one valid reason why the franchise should be denied, and there are a hundred why it should be NEW GRAND THEATRE. Mgr. M. E. MULVEY, Mgr. The stench from the slaughter-hous- e at Twelfth South street is the cause of frequent complaints from residents In the southern part of the city, and judging from reliable accounts the place is kept in so filthy a condition that It Is a menace to the health of the community. Some time ago County Physician Mayo ordered the slaughtering company to abate the nuisance, but it appears It hasnt been done. At this particular time, when diphtheria, typhoid and scarlet fevers are so prevalent in the city, special efforts should be made to prevent the air being filled with foul odors from decaying animal matter. It is almost an Imposwithsibility to run a slaughter-hous- e out it being a nuisance. The safest plan would be to have this abattoir removed to some isolated place a longer distance from the city.
